Marko: "Hamilton heeft laten zien dat hij geen oppositie duldt van Verstappen"

Lewis Hamilton en Max Verstappen zijn voor het 2021 Formule 1-seizoen als de twee protagonisten voor het kampioenschap uitgekomen. Beide coureurs hebben één pole en één overwinning op naam staan. Red Bull Racing top-adviseur Helmut Marko is van mening dat Hamilton al voor een lange tijd niet zulke druk heeft ervaren, en de Brit daarom een niet-karakteristieke fout maakte tijdens de race op Imola.

Halverwege de Grand Prix van Emilia Romagna pitte Lewis Hamilton voor een setje slick-banden om de jacht op Max Verstappen - die na de start pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton voorbij kon gaan - door te zetten. Echter, in een poging om achterblijvers in te halen moest Lewis uitwijken naar een nat stuk baan waardoor hij in Tosa van de baan gleed - iets wat de ervaren zevenvoudig wereldkampioen zelf weinig gebeurt. Ook Hamilton zelf zei dat zo'n fout zeldzaam voor hem was.

"Hamilton heeft voor een lange tijd geen aanhoudende oppositie ervaren", zo vertelt Marko. "Die oppositie is nu verschenen in Red Bull Racing met Max Verstappen. En blijkbaar - zoals mensen dat altijd al gedaan hebben - levert dat reacties op", zo vertelt Marko aan de Duitse RTL.

"Ik vond het bijzonder dat Lewis niet de bocht opgaf, gegeven het feit dat hij aan de buitenkant zat en de bocht niet meer kon halen. Dit toont aan dat Hamilton deze oppositie totaal niet duldt."

"Wanneer de twee coureurs in de wagen zitten en samen op de eerste bocht afgaan, dan gaat het niet meer om tactieken, dan is het gewoon man tegen man", zo vertelt Marko verder. "Dit is heel goed voor het publiek maar ook voor ons als team - het levert veel spanning op bij ons."

Marko reflecteerde ook op zijn eigen leven in de motorsport, en wat hij nog steeds hoopt te bereiken. Velen vragen zich af hoelang hij nog in de sport zal verkeren - de Oostenrijker is recentelijk 78 jaar oud geworden, maar hij zelf geeft toe dat winnen nog steeds in zijn bloed zit.

"Zolang ik fysiek en mentaal fit ben blijf ik geïnteresseerd in projecten - met name de nieuwe. We begeven ons nu absoluut in een winnende positie", zo concludeert Marko tegenover RTL.

  Hij zegt gewoon volgens zijn optiek hoe het de laatste 2 races is gegaan volgens zijn optiek (laat maar komen de eenoog grapjes.. gaap) en ik kan hem geen ongelijk geven.

Guus Hammie heeft het geluk aan zijn kont hangen, anders had hij globaal al 25 punten achter Max gestaan, valt deze mazzel factor in de toekomst in proportie, moet hij toch behoorlijk gaan doortrappen.
