Daniel Ricciardo moet zijn zelfvertrouwen hervinden en is "in de war" na P12

Terwijl zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris vanaf de vijfde startplaats de Grand Prix van Monaco mag aanvangen, zal Daniel Ricciardo de race als twaalfde aanvangen. Dat doet zijn zelfvertrouwen weinig goeds. Zelfvertrouwen is de sleutel in de smalle straten van het prinsdom.

De Australiër geeft dan ook toe dat hij "in de war" is nadat hij een volle seconde tekort kwam op zijn jongere teamgenoot.

Ricciardo won de prestigieuze Grand Prix in 2018, twee jaar nadat hij naast de overwinning greep na een desastreuze pitstop van Red Bull Racing.

Ricciardo worstelt in de McLaren sinds zijn overstap van Renault naar het team uit Woking. "Ik ben waarschijnlijk in de war. Het hele weekend ben ik de mindere ten opzichte van mijn teamgenoot en het kan niet zo zijn dat ik zoveel langzamer ben hier. Het is een mysterie voor mij."

Ricciardo vervolgt: "Ik zegt niet dat ik een seconde sneller zou moeten zijn, maar ik kan mij niet heugen dat ik ooit zo ver achter lag."

Ricciardo vertelde ook na de vrije trainingen dat hij soms het gevoel had een snelle ronde te hebben gereden, terwijl de harde feiten op de tijdentabel hem de waarheid toonden.

"Ik blijf vinden dat mijn ronde niet zo slecht was en als ik dan naar beneden kijk sta ik zo ver achter. Ik heb heb daar nog geen antwoorden op. Ik ben gewoon heel teleurgesteld dat het mij overkomt op een circuit waar ik van houd en waar kwalificeren zo belangrijk is. Dus ja, een raar weekend."

Zijn bekende smile ontbrak dan ook na afloop van de kwalificatie. "Volgens mij is de werkelijkheid dat ik zo'n seconde langzamer ben dan Lando. Natuurlijk ga ik kijken in de data maar het gat is zo enorm. We doen gewoon wat we kunnen", aldus de Australiër bij ZiggoSport.

Ik heb altijd gedacht dat Daniel uiteindelijk wel boven zou komen drijven; en dat kan nog steeds natuurlijk. Kijk maar naar zijn Renault seizoenen. Maar dat hij nu (wederom) geen tekst en uitleg kan geven aan zijn traagheid, dat stemt mij nu wel wat somberder. Immers, zolang je weet wat er aan schort, kun je daaraan gaan werken. Dat wordt echter wel erg lastig als je "geen flauw benul hebt" waar het aan ligt...

Daniel hint er in het oorspronkelijke artikel naar dat er iets mis is met zijn auto. Dat lijkt mij ook.

Hij geeft aan dat er geen enkele bocht op het circuit is waar hij sneller is dan Lando. Dat is raar. Je auto is misschien minder goed afgesteld voor 1 bocht, maar dan ben je toch wel ergens beter in een andere bocht. Zo’n kort circuit en dan een seconde achter je teamgenoot, dat soort verschillen zag je niet eens tussen Max en Albon.

Ricciardo zegt dat hij nog niet helemaal hrt vertrouwen heeft, maar dat hem dat een halve tiende hier moet kosten en een halve tiende daar. Hij zou 2-3 tienden achter Lando verklaarbaar vinden, maar een seconde niet. Hij zegt dat de ronden die hij rijdt ook snel aanvoelen. Hij begrijpt er niets van.

Misschien moet McLaren hem voor volgende race een nieuw chassis geven?

  Ik vind het ook vreemd. In Spanje leek hij toch weer op de goede weg. En als je inderdaad aangeeft dat je ronden snel aanvoelen en alsnog een seconde erachter bent is dat vreemd. Ik ga ervanuit dat je zulke grote verschillen kan aanvoelen. Helemaal als het een goede ronde is. Neemt niet weg dan Ricciardo zich wel snel moet gaan verbeteren anders kan dit wel eens een kort avontuur gaan worden.

  Ik ben wel benieuwd naar wat het verschil is tussen Ricciardo en Noris in de simulator van McLaren.

  Ik denk dat een nieuw chassis wel eens goed kan zijn. Mclaren ondervind nu namelijk zelf ook hinder omdat Riccardo niet mee kan vechten tegen Ferrari

  Als er iets mis is met de auto dan ben je ook in Spanje traag. Het verschil is denk ik dat ze in Spanje getest hebben en dat dit allemaal wat meer vertrouwd voelt.
  
  Gebrek aan vertrouwen is echt killing in Monaco. Afhankelijk van hoe ernstig het is kan dat makkelijk een seconde verschil verklaren.

Riciardo valt een beetje door de mand...... bij Renault had hij ook al moeite om de auto te ontwikkelen, iets waarvoor hij tegen de hoofdprijs toch binnen was gehaald. Ocon had niet zoveel moeite met hem.
Nu bij Mclaren heeft hij ook een eeuwigheid nodig voor hij op snelheid is.
