Max Verstappen ligt liever wat langer op bed dan dat hij wandelend het circuit moet verkennen

De leider in het werekdkampioenschap Formule 1 Max Verstappen ligt liever langer in bed dan dat hij een rondje circuit moet lopen met zijn engineers. Het zal wellicht niets te maken hebben met het feit dat Verstappen tegenwoordig erg gelukkig is met zijn nieuwe vriendin.

Veel coureurs maken er een traditie van om de circuits op de donderdag wandelend te verkennen samen met hun engineers. Daarbij wordt dan doorgaans bekeken waar er tijdswinst te behalen valt en of er veranderingen aan het circuit zijn.

De 23-jarige winnaar van de Grand Prix van Monaco stond nog niet eerder op het podium in Bakoe en dus werd door journalisten de vraag op geworpen wat nu het belang is van de trackwalk, ook nu er ook zoveel digitale mogelijkheden zijn om de baan te verkennen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de racesimulatoren.

Verstappen antwoordt: "Ik heb er al sinds 2017 geen één meer gedaan. Ik heb helemaal geen zin om te wandelen", zegt hij lachend.

"Ik verkies een paar minuten langer in bed. Als ik de baan wil leren kennen, dan rijd ik mijn out-lap gewoon wat langzamer, kijk dan wat om mij heen."

Bij het persmoment zit ook Esteban Ocon. De Alpine-coureur loopt wel trouw elke donderdag voor een Grand Prix zijn rondje en hij meent dat je dan pas echt kunt zien wat een simulator niet kan.

Zo vertelt hij dat de baan momenteel nog als smerig is, dat er een aantal kerbstones is verlegd of ontbreken en dat hij daardoor niet verrast wil worden als hij in de auto zit.

"Ik doe die wandel rondes altijd wel. Soms leer je er niets van, maar soms ook wel en het gaat erom dat die momenten dat je er wat van opsteekt voor mij belangrijk zijn."

Verstappen bedankte Ocon vriendelijk voor de gegeven informatie.

"Esteban vertelde mij zojuist een aantal dingen over de baan. Ik zal een paar meter eerder remmen tijdens mijn eerste ronde", aldus de Limburgse kanshebber op de wereldtitel dit seizoen.

Een spreekwoordelijke lachende boer met kiespijn zal er vrolijker uit hebben gezien dan de gelaatsuitdrukking van Ocon op dat moment lijkt te zijn.

Wel grapig day Hamilton in het verleden hoer veel kritiek op kreeg. Daarbij gebruikt Hamilton die tijd niet om in bed te liggen. Hamilton is juist degene die het langste op het circuit aanwezig is.

Een wandeling met engineers zou ik zeker overwegen. Even niet overleggen op kantoor, ieder achter zijn scherm met alle data en statistieken. Gewoon een andere contex, gezellig en wat informeler. Maar Max moet alleen maar doen wat hem het beste lijkt. En Ocon moet leren zwijgen natuurlijk.
