Helmut Marko: "Het was 50-50 of Perez wel van zijn plek zou komen"

Het was kantje boord of Sergio Perez wel van zijn plek zou komen bij de herstart van de Azerbeidzjan Grand oPrix in de straten van Bakoe. De race was stil gelegd na de klapband van Max Verstappen die op het rechte stuk vol in de muur ging nadat zijn linker achterband van Pirelli het begaf.

Sergio Perez bleek een hydraulisch probleem te hebben, en het scheelde weinig of hij kon helemaal niet van zijn plaats komen tijdens de herstart.

Dat zegt Dr. Helmut Marko, die overigens in de rechtsgeleerdheid promoveerde en sindsdien de titel doctor mag voeren. In een interview met het blad met de pakkende titel Auto, Motor und Sport legt uit dat teamleden van Red Bull Racing met geknepen billen zaten vanwege hun zorgen om de toestand van de bolide waarmee Perez uiteindelijk de race wist te winnen. Direct na het behalen van de finish adviseerde het team hun Mexicaanse winnaar dan ook om de auto stil te zetten en uit te stappen.

Dr. Helmut Marko: Goddank had Perez was wielspin toen hij opnieuw startte, want als hij beter was weggekomen dan had hij samen met Hamilton naast de baan gestaan."

Marko vertelt dat de kans sowieso al 50% was dat Perez niet verder kon racen, vanwege een hydraulisch probleem.

Marko: "Zijn auto verloor hydraulische vloeistof. Dat gebeurde al eerder in de race. Toen de wagen stil stond tijdens de rode vlag situatie, bleef het druppelen."

Uit voorzorg geparkeerd na behalen van de finish

Marko legt uit waarom Perez direct na de race zijn auto langs de baan parkeerde nadat hij de race had gewonnen. "Hij parkeerde hem voor de zekerheid. Wanneer de storing echt precies zou zijn opgetreden is niet te zeggen. Het zou er in ieder geval toe leiden dat hij op een gegeven moment geen stuurbekrachtiging meer zou hebben. Vervolgens zou er een kettingreactie zijn veroorzaakt."

Na de crash van Verstappen komt Sergio Perez in eerste instantie een ronde achter de safetycar te rijden, zijn team roept hem dan ook op om niet te slingeren, vanwege het hydraulische probleem. Uiteindelijk weet Perez maximaal punten veilig te stellen voor Red Bull Racing na de geplofte band van Max Verstappen en de fout van Lewis Hamilton bij de herstart.

Nou dan heeft Perez en RBR flink mazzel gehad. Mocht ook wel na de pech bij Verstappen. Mijn held heeft zijn kans op 25 punten eigenhandig in het putje gegooid met zijn gevinger.

  "Helmuttie weet het altijd wel spannend te maken" Weet je waarom Perez zo'n slechte start had? Hij had zijn banden niet op temperatuur, vanwege de problemen moch hij nieteens "weaven". Ik denk dat jij er dus weer eens behoorlijk naast zit
