Esteban Ocon lobbyt bij Alpine voor een ander chassis

Nadat de hand richting het papier werd bewogen door Esteban Ocon voor een verlenging van zijn contract bij Alpine, reed de Fransman geen deuk meer in een pakje boter.

Tijdens de Grand Prix van Frankrijk maakte het Franse team vrolijk bekend dat het nog drie jaar langer door gaat met Ocon, maar het lijkt zijn prestaties weinig goeds te hebben gedaan.

De verklaring daarvoor kan wel eens liggen in het chassis, denkt Ocon. Hij lobbyt nu dan ook binnen het team om een ander chassis voor de blauwe bolide waarin hij rijdt.

Esteban Ocon sluit dan ook een verandering van chassis niet uit voor de Britse GP van dit weekend op Silverstone.

Eerder in 2021 had de Fransman de overhand op zijn tweevoudig kampioen teamgenoot Fernando Alonso, die dit jaar met Alpine terugkeerde in de Formule 1.

"Ik ben nu gelukkiger en comfortabeler", zei de 39-jarige Alonso na Oostenrijk, "maar ik weet niet of het samenviel met het feit dat hij (Ocon) zich ongemakkelijker voelde of dat het voor iedereen een natuurlijke ontwikkeling is Ik weet ook niet wat er met Esteban gebeurt, maar ik weet zeker dat hij binnenkort weer super competitief zal zijn", voegde de Spanjaard eraan toe.

Ocon is nu 24 jaar en viel in Oostenrijk uit nadat hij klem kwam te zitten tussen Schumacher en Giovinazzi. Nadien vraagt hij zich af of er een fundamenteel probleem is met zijn auto.

Ocon: "Deze week heb ik een ontmoeting met het team om te beoordelen hoeveel onderdelen we kunnen veranderen voordat we weer op het goede spoor komen."

Op de vraag of dat een chassiswissel zou kunnen zijn, antwoordde Ocon: "Hoe meer we kunnen veranderen, hoe beter. Want dan zijn er minder twijfels. Het is onaanvaardbaar om op zo'n klein circuit een seconde langzamer te zijn dan Alonso. Er is absoluut iets niet goed gegaan en dat moeten we begrijpen."
