Nieuwe Ferrari motor was niet zonder risico: "Update zo snel mogelijk gekomen"

In Rusland en Turkije kregen Ferrari-coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz de beschikking over een nieuwe motor. Het project zat al eventjes in de pijpleiding maar zag bij Leclerc in de bolide voor het eerst het daglicht in Rusland. Achteraf blijkt dat plaatsen van de nieuwe motor niet geheel zonder risico's was.

Ferrari is in een fel duel verwikkeld om de derde plaats in het constructeurskampioenschap. Ze moeten daarvoor wel afrekenen met McLaren. Het Britse team heeft maar 7,5 punten meer dan Ferrari en dus is alles nog mogelijk.

Risico's

Teambaas Mattia Binotto legt in gesprek met Motorsport.com uit hoe de vork in de steel stak: "In Sotsji was het onze eerste doelstelling om zoveel mogelijk ervaring op te doen met een schuin oog op 2022. Dat is waarom we de update zo snel mogelijk hebben uitgevoerd zodra die klaar was. We hebben gehaast en we hebben ook risico's genomen. Het is altijd een risicovolle onderneming. We wilden natuurlijk meters maken en ervaring op doen voor 2022 als de motoren worden bevroren."

Kleine voorsprong

Vooralsnog zijn ze bij de legendarische renstal wel te spreken over de prestaties van de nieuwe krachtbron. Maar volgens Binotto wint Ferrari er niet ineens minuten door: "Het geeft ons een kleine voorsprong. Ik wil er geen feiten aan vastknopen want het verschilt per circuit. Het is niet alleen pure power uit de ICE, het gaat ook om energy recovery. Het is een beetje complex maar het geeft ons zeker winst."

Die derde plek is inderdaad qua hoeveelheid aerodynamische werkzaamheden-tijd idd niet interessant. Sterker nog voor een grote organisatie als Ferrari (en ook McLaren) zou ik het begrijpen als je meer windtunneltests boven prijzengeld verkiest. Dat zag er, afgaande op Turkije, veelbelovend uit. Misschien ook wel ietwat circuit-gerelateerd? Ik kan me herinneren dat ze ook vorig jaar, weliswaar onder andere omstandigheden m.b.t. het asfalt, zeer sterk voor de dag kwamen in Turkije.

Eerst maar even Austin afwachten maar ik vrees toch voorzichtig dat het voor McLaren in de strijd om p3 het niet goed uitziet.

  Die derde.plek is niet heilig voor Ferrari, het beetje extra windtunneltijd wat gepaard gaat met de vierde plek vinden ze ook wel prettig.

Interessante strategie maar zeer prima te volgen zolang je als Ferrari zijnde niet in de titelstrijd zit zoals dit jaar het geval is.
  
  Toch denk ik dat bij een Ferrari vs McLaren strijd bij beide kampen, en dus ook Ferrari, een stukje prestige kleeft omdat het historisch gezien toch de grootste rivaliteit binnen de F1 is, tussen de twee grootste renstallen. Ze zullen elkaar daarom ook graag willen verslaan.

  @McNorris Ik vrees dat er weer eentje gaat steigeren als hij je laatste comment leest ;-)...
  Verder moet Ferrari haar doelstellingen trachten te bereiken. Als fan zie ik ze graag Mclaren kloppen maar 2022 is verder natuurlijk veel belangrijker. Ik vertrouw en reken op Binotto. 't Is zeker genen uil!

  Uiteraard moet Ferrari maar ook McLaren hun ware doelstellingen, weer eens kampioen zien te worden, bewerkstelligen. En als McLaren fan is voor ook voor mij 2022 veel belangrijker dan het huidige jaar. Maar Ferrari verslaan is altijd mooi meegenomen hoewel het dus niet ten koste van de positionering onder de nieuwe tijdperk ingaande volgend jaar moet gaan.

  @McNorris Hopelijk staan we volgend jaar 'lijnrecht' tegenover elkaar en zijn RBR en Mercedes niet meer dan een voetnoot. Forza Mclaren... Nou nee, dat was overdreven ;-)

  De goede aerodynamica en bandenmanagement gaf McLaren een duidelijke voorsprong op Monza, ook de topsnelheid gaf ze een voordeel op Ferrari.
  McLaren had soms 3 tot 4 tienden op Ferrari, die is niet helemaal verdwenen, maar hun snelheidsvoordeel is behoorlijk geslonken.
  Met de update heeft Ferrari de set up mogelijkheden danig vergroot.
  De strijd zal idd beslist gaan worden op baan en/of asfalt karakteristieken.
  Het had mooi geweest om in deze verhitte Ferrari/McLaren strijd Ron Dennis en Arrivabene aan de pitmuur te hebben voor wat extra strijd naast de baan.
