Pirelli maakte zich zorgen over banden Ocon: "Gelukkig is er niets gebeurd"

Esteban Ocon presteerde iets haast onmogelijks in Turkije. De Franse Alpine-coureur reed de race uit op dezelfde banden waarop hij was gestart. Bij bandenleverancier Pirelli hebben ze wel eens leukere middagen gekend, Ocon speelde namelijk met vuur. Het pakte wel goed uit want hij werd 10e.

Pirelli-topman Mario Isola durfde eigenlijk niet te kijken. Tegenover Motorsport.com vertelt de Italiaan hoe hij de verbazingwekkende actie van Ocon beleefde: "Ik kan niet ontkennen dat ik nerveus was! Het was een moeilijke beslissing voor hen en ze besloten risico te nemen. We hebben hen gewaarschuwd. Gelukkig is er niets gebeurd. We zijn blij met het resultaat van de race, maar het was gevaarlijk."

Ocon reed immers de hele race op de inter, een regenband. Isola legt uit hoe het werkt: "De intermediate is bedoeld voor wisselende omstandigheden. Het werkt prima als het nat is. Als de baan opdroogt, dan slijt de band. Daardoor wordt het op een zeker moment een slick, en die werkt ook prima. Vervolgens is er een punt waarop er geen rubber meer op de band zit en je moet wisselen."
