Pirelli klaar met tests 2022-banden: "COVID zorgde ervoor dat we de planning moesten omgooien"

Aankomend seizoen gaat er erg veel veranderen in de Formule 1. Ook de banden zullen eraan moeten geloven. De huidige rubbertjes worden vervangen door gloednieuwe 18 inch-banden. Bandenleverancier Pirelli is net klaar met het testen van de nieuwe compounds die volgend jaar vast en zeker voor veel spektakel gaan zorgen.

Maandag reed Alpine-testcoureur Daniil Kvyat 167 rondjes op Paul Ricard op de nieuwe intermediates en voltooide de test met succes. Over het hele jaar hebben 9 van de 10 teams getest met de nieuwe banden en de benodigde data en feedback is dan ook daar voor Pirelli.

Testprogramma

Pirelli-bons Mario Isola is tevreden met het verzette werk. Op de site van de Formule 1 reageert hij: “Met deze laatste natte test kunnen we eindelijk ons testprogramma voor de nieuwe 18 inch-banden sluiten. Vorig jaar zorgde de COVID-19 pandemie ervoor dat we ons complete testprogramma moesten herzien. We moesten het testen op de baan afzeggen en ons concentreren simulaties, virtuele ontwikkeling en modelleren.”

Fine tunen

Alhoewel de huidige reeks testen erop zit betekent dat niet dat er niet meer getest zal worden. Isola: “Volgend jaar hebben we nog steeds wat tests tot onze beschikking wat ons de kans geeft om de nieuwe banden te fine tunen met de 2022 auto, als dat nodig is. Zodra de specificaties zijn goedgekeurd door de FIA zullen de coureurs de kans krijgen om de definitieve band te testen.”

Wel fijn dat de rubbertjes een keer worden vervangen. Die versleten rubbertjes piepen anders zo.
