Oud-Formule 1 coureur Kazuki Nakajima stopt na succesvolle Le Mans-jaren

Afgelopen week kondigde voormalig Formule 1-coureur Anthony Davidson zijn afscheid als coureur aan. Nu is er nog een voormalig Formule 1-coureur die zijn afscheid van het WEC bekend maakt. Kazuki Nakajima heeft namelijk aangegeven na de laatste WEC-race van het seizoen te stoppen als Toyota-coureur.

Nakajima debuteerde bij de Braziliaanse Grand Prix van 2007 in de Formule 1 bij Williams. Het legendarische team reed toentertijd met Toyota motoren en Nakajima was verbonden aan dat Japanse merk. Ook in 2008 en 2009 reed de Japanner voor het team van Williams. Zijn beste resultaat was een zesde plaats maar al gauw kwam de klad erin. Nakajima scoorde in heel 2009 geen punt terwijl hij toch een volledig seizoen reed.

Na de Formule 1-exit van Toyota bleef Nakajima het merk trouw. Hij was dan ook één van de coureurs die het merk inzette toen ze het WEC betraden. Het werd een waar succesnummer. Nakajima won uiteindelijk drie keer de 24 uur van Le Mans. Bij twee van die zeges deelde hij de auto met Fernando Alonso.
