Alonso baalt van uitgebleven gevecht met Hamilton: 'Geen van ons was er toen klaar voor"

Fernando Alonso bewees afgelopen weekend maar weer eens dat je hem nooit moet afschrijven. De ervaren Spanjaard reed een perfecte race en bekroonde dat met een uitstekende derde plaats. Het was zijn eerste podium sinds 2014 en hij doet het over het algemeen helemaal niet slecht in zijn comeback-seizoen.

Alonso deelde het podium met Lewis Hamilton en Max Verstappen. In een zilvergrijs verleden was Alonso nog de teamgenoot van Hamilton. In 2007 vochten de toenmalig McLaren-teamgenoten een heftig duel uit met elkaar en Kimi Räikkönen. De Fin versloeg de twee kemphanen met slechts één puntje verschil.

Niet klaar voor

Toch kijkt Alonso niet met een tevreden gevoel terug op die periode. In de Beyond the Grid podcast opent hij zijn hart: "Met Lewis heb ik nooit de competitie gevoerd waar ik naar uit keek. In 2007 waren we inderdaad teamgenoten en dat is volgens sommigen het best mogelijke gevecht. Maar geen van ons was er toen klaar voor. Hamilton was er als rookie niet klaar voor en ik was niet op mijn best."

Interne gevechten

Alonso kwam dat jaar binnen bij McLaren en was er nooit echt op zijn gemak. Na dat jaar verliet hij het team ook weer. Alonso legt het uit: "Ik was nog niet goed geïntrigeerd in het team. Er waren veel interne gevechten en er was veel stress binnen het team. We werden dat jaar ook slecht gemanaged. We haalden evenveel punten maar ik denk dat het beter kon."

Dit was een leuke Beyond The Grid. Ze hebben jammer genoeg niet meer in gelijkwaardig materiaal gezeten. Zou leuk zijn als ze volgend jaar in gelijk materiaal zitten.

Fernando en Renault is altijd een goeie combinatie geweest om een of andere reden.
Wie weet trekken ze het unieke concept door dat ze dit jaar zijn ingeslagen en was dat al de insteek van bij het begin en zo voorzien in hun LRP (LongRangePlan). Qatar is een circuit dat eigenlijk op zijn lijf is geschreven, snel en agressief, mogelijk is Jeddah ook goed voor hem - blij dat hij een podium kon scoren na lange tijd. Hoewel niet meer van de jongste, in de race zal hij altijd wel zijn mannetjes staan.

  Jeddah is mogelijk nog sneller dan Losail. Ik zie eigenlijk maar twee trage bochten op de twee uiterste delen van deze atypische track. Alles daartussen is een aneenschakeling van snelle, vloeiende bochtencombinaties. Met die raketmotor van Shovlin gaat Max het erg lastig krijgen. Alonso kan wel trachten een P3 te behalen. Maar het is dan weer wat voorbarig om Perez en Bottas buiten beschouwing te laten. Nog meer hoop ik op een Leclerc en Sainz in bloedvorm. Al denk ik dat deze heren eerder hen zinnen moeten zetten op Abu Dhabi.

  Klopt! Best wel leuk dat de machtsverhoudingen in het middenveld even spannend zijn. Ferrari gaat 2 GP´s tegemoet die hun goed moeten liggen. Enkel is de ondergrond een heel groot vraagteken op dit gloednieuw circuit
