Norris wijdt tegenvallende tweede seizoenshelft aan pech: "Hadden beter verdiend"

McLaren en Lando Norris begonnen enorm sterk aan het afgelopen seizoen. De jonge Brit reed enorm sterk in de eerste seizoenshelft en stond zelfs geruime tijd derde in de strijd om het kampioenschap. Maar in de tweede seizoenshelft stortte de resultaten compleet in elkaar waardoor Norris uiteindelijk slechts als zesde eindigde.

De druiven waren behoorlijk zuur na afloop van het seizoen vorige week. McLarens tweede seizoenshelft was zwak en Norris weet dat zelf ook heus wel. Maar de Brit zag ook dat er het een en ander misging. Tegenover Motorsport.com sprak hij zich uit: "Ik heb zeker enkele fouten gemaakt. In Brazilië maakte ik de grootste fout, die kostte mij veel. Daarnaast hebben we gewoon heel erg veel pech gehad. We hebben lekke banden, problemen, incidenten en nog van alles gehad."

Podiums

In de eerste seizoenshelft eindigde Norris nog met enkele regelmaat op het podium. Onder andere in Imola en Monaco mocht hij het podium beklimmen. In Rusland leek hij onderweg naar de overwinning totdat hij in de absolute slotfase van de baan schoof in de heftige regen. Maar daarna bleven de hoogtepunten uit.

Pech

Norris beaamd dat de klad erin kwam: "De tweede seizoenshelft was gewoon niet waar we op gehoopt hadden. We hadden beter verdiend. Ik denk dat we het veel beter hebben gedaan met het team dan het nu lijkt. We hebben gewoon veel pech gehad, dat is het gewoon."

Wat is die Ricciardo me toch tegengevallen zeg, en wat erger is, hij blijft maar grijnzen...

  Hij verdiend een mega salaris. Daar zal hij wel aan denken als hij lacht. Verder zal hij uitkijken naar de nieuwe auto's. Mclaren kan er zomaar staan komend jaar.

Nou, pech gehad? McLaren kon Ferrari na Rusland gewoon nog maar moeilijk bijbenen. De nieuwe motor bracht Ferrari veel en het leek ondertussen wel alsof McLaren in performance achteruitging, ook relatief tov Mercedes en RBR.

Als Ricciardo een beter seizoen had gehad, dan had McLaren nog derde kunnen worden obv de eerste seizoenshelft. Maar de tweede seizoenshelft was de snelheid in de auto er gewoonweg niet. Het maakt me ook niet uit verder. Het team heeft de enige 1-2 gescoord van alle teams dit seizoen, en daarmee ook de eerste overwinning sinds 2012 gepakt, op eigen kracht.

Er staat een goed team en dat geeft vertrouwen naar de toekomst. Volgend jaar ergens krijgt het team ook de nieuwe windtunnel operationeel en door de vierde plek kan het team daar toch meer uren van gebruik maken dan als het derde was geworden. Ik zie het positief.
