Marko prijst 'loyale' Perez: "Doet zijn werk zonder te klagen of te protesteren"

Aankomend seizoen blijft er veel hetzelfde bij Red Bull Racing. Voor het eerst sinds jaren behoudt Max Verstappen dezelfde teamgenoot. Sergio Perez liet in 2021 zien wat hij waard was door in de slotfase van het seizoen meermaals Verstappen bij te staan bij diens succesvolle titelstrijd.

Vooral tijdens de seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi viel het beulswerk van de Mexicaan op. Perez hield Verstappens aartsrivaal Lewis Hamilton op door waanzinnig te verdedigen. Hierdoor kon Verstappen het gat dichtrijden en de afloop van het titelduel is inmiddels in Nederland vaderlandse sportgeschiedenis. Perez kreeg volop lof van analisten maar ook vanuit het eigen team.

Downforce

Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko kijkt nog één keer terug op die beslissende actie van Perez in Abu Dhabi. De Oostenrijker was te gast bij zijn landgenoten van ServusTV. Daar legde hij nog één keer uit waarom Perez zo goed kon verdedigen op het Yas Marina Circuit: "Hij had gewoon meer downforce en daarom was hij sneller in de derde sector."

Loyaal

Marko is over het algemeen een grote fan van Perez. Het sublieme verdedigingswerk van de Mexicaan zorgde alleen maar voor nog meer respect. Marko is duidelijk een trots man: "Hij is enorm loyaal en een enorme teamplayer. Natuurlijk hebben we verschillende scenario's met hem doorgenomen. Hij doet zijn werk zonder te klagen, protesteren of vragen te stellen."

Niet vreemd , he. Ricciardo stond in zijn tijd bij RBR op een shortlist om voor het WK te strijden. Gasly en Albon waren allebei upcoming sterren met vrachten aan ambities.
Alledrie zijn ze weggeveegd.

Perez racet op extra tijd. Zoals hijzelf aangeeft: anders was 'ie misschien al met pensioen geweest.

  Perez vind het wel goed zo, hij racet bij een topteam, krijgt een goed salaris mede dank aan zijn sponsor, en weet en accepteert dat hij nooit zo snel als Max zal zijn, simpelweg omdat de auto rondom Max wordt gebouwd. Het is hem dus duidelijk dat hij een dienende Rol speelt voor een top coureur, net als Bottas, Webber, Massa, Barrichello, Irvin, Berger en noem maar op in het verleden.

  Beste was geweest om Ricciardo of Sainz naast Max te hebben maar dan was Max geen wk geworden afgelopen jaar. Wel constructeurs btw.
