Norris kreeg aanbieding van andere F1-teams: "Ga ik niet over liegen"

Vanochtend werd bekend dat Lando Norris zijn contract bij McLaren heeft verlengd tot 2025. De jonge Brit spreekt met zijn contractverlenging overduidelijk vertrouwen uit in zijn werkgever. Norris debuteerde in 2019 in de Formule 1 bij het Britse team en kende vorig jaar zijn beste seizoen tot nu toe. Hij eindigde meermaals op het podium en pakte pole in Rusland.

Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat Norris blijft rijden voor het team van McLaren. De Brit is al geruime tijd verbonden aan de ploeg en hij lijkt zich op zijn plaats te voelen bij de oranje equipe. Toch gingen er soms verhalen rond over een mogelijke overstap van Norris. Zo vonden sommigen hem wel passen bij het team van Red Bull Racing.

Liegen

Toch koos Norris voor contractverlenging bij McLaren. Maar de Brit is sportief genoeg om toe te geven dat hij ook met andere teams heeft gesproken. Tegenover The Race spreekt hij zich uit: "Ik ga er ook niet over liegen. Er waren hier en daar wat kleine dingetjes met andere teams maar niets was echt serieus. Om welke teams het ging? Dat kan ik niet zeggen maar dat kunnen jullie vast wel raden."

Serieuze optie

De contractverlening kwam voor vrijwel niemand als een donderslag bij heldere hemel. Norris lijkt op zijn plaats bij de legendarische ploeg. Toch geeft Norris eerlijk toe dat een McLaren-exit een serieuze optie was: "Ja, natuurlijk. Ik moest alle factoren laten meewegen. Het is nog steeds mijn loopbaan waar het omgaat, toch? Dus dan kijk ik naar de best mogelijke opties voor mijzelf."

Ik vermoed dat elk team in de achterhoede wel gebeld heeft dat hij kan instappen (zonder salaris) en van de ‘top’ teams denk ik dat Red Bull wel een belletje eraan gewaagd heeft. Ook Mercedes misschien. Voor als Lewis ermee stopt
