Horner twijfelt over DRS-zones: "Kan zomaar een soort MotoGP-race worden"

Het team van Red Bull Racing kende vandaag een redelijke vrijdag in Melbourne. De Oostenrijkse renstal moest wel wat tijd toegeven op de concurrentie van Ferrari. Stercoureur Max Verstappen was daarnaast ook niet geheel tevreden maar het is alsnog de verwachting dat het weer een zeer spannend duel gaat worden.

Op de krappe baan in Melbourne was het altijd lastig om in te halen. Dit jaar is alles echter anders aangezien de baan is aangepast. Er zijn dit jaar zelfs vier (!) DRS-zones en dat roept vragen op. Dat de coureurs elkaar veelvuldig gaan tegenkomen staat in ieder geval vast, tijdens de trainingen had vrijwel iedereen moeite met verkeer.

Jeddah

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner is geen grote fan van de grote hoeveelheid DRS-zones. De Britse teambaas is tegenover Sky Sports nogal kritisch op de keuze. Hij vergelijkt het met de tactische situatie van een race eerder, in Jeddah. Horner: "Dat wil je hier niet. Ik denk dat als je in bijvoorbeeld Jeddah de DRS-lijn wat later, of in de bocht, had geplaatst er geen tactisch spel zou zijn. Ik denk dat het hier interessant gaat worden met vier zones. Het is ongeveer het hele rondje. Je wilt niet dat DRS makkelijk is, dat ze er zo langs rijden."

MotoGP

Horner is een groot voorstander van veranderingen omtrent de DRS. Toch kijkt dit Brit wel reikhalzend uit naar de race van zondag. "De DRS zou er eigenlijk voor moeten zorgen dat je meer een slipstream effect hebt. Het zou een strijd moeten zijn in plaats van er zomaar voorbij knallen. De lengtes van deze DRS-zones gaan heel erg interessant zijn in de race op zondag. Het kan zomaar een soort MotoGP-race worden waar je twee/drie keer per ronde positiewisselingen kan zien."

Vroeger zat ik reikhalzend te wachten op zulke klappers, maar ik toen kende ik de coureurs ook nog niet.
Burti bijvoorbeeld hebben we twee keer enorm zien crashen; ik had toen nog geen idee hoe Burti eruit zag dus ik voelde het gewoon veel minder (in combinatie met dat je zelf n stuk jonger bent en je empathie met de jaren aan terrein wint ; bij mij wel althans).
Ik juichte toen Schumacher crashte in Silverstone als Hakkinen fan. Toen t duidelijk werd dat ie z'n benen had gebroken ging ik eerst rekenen hoe lang hij eruit zou liggen en wat dat hem ongeveer aan punten ging kosten. Geen medeleven zeg ik eerlijk. Hoe anders ervaar ik dit nu...

  Hoewel James Hunt fan vond ik als puber (15 jaar) het ongeluk van Niki Lauda vreselijk. Zo ook de dood van Ronnie Peterson en noem maar op.

Saai zal het hopelijk niet worden. Maar ik snap het wel wat Horner zegt. Als je zoveel DRS zones aanlegt, kan je net zo goed ook zonder DRS gaan rijden. Ik vind zelf ook dat als echt blijkt dat de auto's strak kunnen volgen, de DRS eraf kan. Het is en blijft een foefje om meer inhaalacties te krijgen.

  Ergens klopt het gewoon niet dat iemand die achter een ander rijdt voordeeltjes krijgt, die de voorste niet krijgt.
  Ik ben ook blij dat het bandenreglement (Q2) is aangepast, want op het moment dat P11 gunstiger is dan P10 dan klopt er iets niet.
  Meest treffende drs voorbeelden zijn de acties in Jeddah met Verstappen en Hamilton vorig jaar, en Leclerc en Verstappen dit jaar.

  Ja natuurlijk. Het is gewoon een knop die je in mag drukken wanneer je wilt. Dat kost je alleen wel PtP tijd, maar het mag natuurlijk wel. Anders zou nummer laatst er helemaal niks aan hebben.
