Norris: "Ik heb geen fout gemaakt door mijn contract te verlengen"

Lando Norris heeft gereageerd op de uitspraken van diverse prominenten dat het verlengen van zijn McLaren-contract voor meerdere jaren een grote fout is geweest. Voormalig F1-wereldkampioen Jenson Button sloeg alarm over de lucratieve nieuwe deal van Norris die hem tot eind 2025 bij het Britse team zal houden.

In Melbourne reageerde de 22-jarige Brit: "Ik zie veel verhalen dat ik de verkeerde beslissing heb genomen, maar dat is niet het geval. Er waren kansen om naar andere teams te gaan. Maar is het het beste om één ​​of twee jaar ergens anders te rijden waarna het misschien nog erger wordt? Of is het beter om hier te zijn en voor de lange termijn te gaan? Ik geloof in het project van McLaren en de toekomst die we tegemoet gaan."

Het is zeker een interessante vraag, aangezien Norris uiteindelijk gokt op de lange termijn. Vreemd genoeg is het in Woking gebaseerde team vaak gelinkt aan een samenwerking met Audi vanaf 2026, hoewel de laatste berichten suggereren dat de gesprekken in een patstelling terecht zijn gekomen.

Toen hem werd gevraagd naar de goedkeuring van Volkswagen op bestuursniveau van Audi en Porsche om de F1 in te gaan, gaf Norris toe: "Wij en Red Bull lijken de teams te zijn die daarmee verbonden zijn. Ik kan daar geen commentaar op geven om eerlijk te zijn. Dat zul je echt aan Andreas Seidl moeten vragen. Maar het is natuurlijk goed voor de Formule 1 als er grote fabrikanten bij betrokken worden."

Norris heeft toch wel de mond gesnoerd een beetje met deze kwalificatie. Er zit snelheid in die auto. En hij staat voor Mercedes.
Overigens hebben die prominenten dit vorig jaar al geroepen: Te vroeg getekend.

    Ik vraag me af wie die 'diverse prominenten' zijn geweest.
    Want hoe kun je zo'n oordeel nu al geven. Het seizoen is nog maar net begonnen.

      ik denk dat red-bull vorig jaar echt wel heeft rond gekeken voor een vervanger van Perez.

    Natuurlijk zegt Norris wat. Het zou wat zijn als Norris tegen een journalist zou zeggen dat hij spijt heeft. Dat zou ene dolksteek in de rug van zijn eigen team zijn, natuurlijk doet hij dat niet!

    Zeker met nieuwe regels kunnen er wat veranderingen ontstaan in de pikorde en is het niet altijd handig om meteen voor meerdere jaren te tekenen. In een ander geval zou je wel voor een soort ontsnappingsclausule kunnen zorgen. Ik heb begrepen dat Verstappen ook zoiets heeft op laten nemen in zijn eigen nieuwe mega contract.

      Norris en zijn mensen om hem heen zijn zeker en vast ook zo slim geweest @Damon, maar of dat naar buiten wordt gebracht is maar de vraag…

      Inderdaad met de huidige regels van bv windtunnel tijd kan het best zijn dat Ferrari of redbull snelheid gaat verliezen doordat ze minder tunneltijd krijgen vanwege hun positie in het klassement. Aan het einde van het seizoen

      Windtunnels worden inmiddels software-matig gesimuleerd. Kan via distributed cpu power over de hele wereld. Berekeningen (equivalent van metingen) duren dus split seconds in plaats van uren. Men stopt nu de meest veelbelovende modellen in de windtunnel en men heeft veel minder windtunnel tijd nodig.

      Waar het echt mis gaat qua ontwikkeling is dat men minder geld heeft om te besteden. Men zoekt dus of naar veel updates met goedkoper materiaal. Of men zoekt dat met minder testen met duurder materiaal. Persoonlijk vind ik het verontrustend als ik daar dieper over nadenk. Ik moet dan aan Senna denken. Of nog veel eerder aan al die doden in de jaren 70 en 80. Men zocht de limiet qua ontwikkeling op en ging er overheen qua veiligheid. Bij Senna is het niet bewezen hoewel er na zijn dood wel geruchten over waren. Maar de periode 70-80er jaren zijn er toch duidelijke aanwijzingen voor geweest dat men met de levens van de rijders gokte. Waren wel andere tijden. Maar goed. Toch mijn zorg.

      Het is altijd slim om een lang contract af te sluiten. Iedereen kan wel wat gaan roepen maar alleen team Norris en McLaren weet wat de clausules zijn.

    Waarheid is dat hij niets heeft te zoeken naast Verstappen, dat Ferrari geen zitje vrij heeft en wachten op Hamilton niet werkt. Hamilton roept al jaren dat hij stopt. Maar ik denk dat hij gewoon nog gaat verlengen. En al zou hij dat niet doen. Dan komt hij naast Russell die dan al ingeburgerd is.

    Gevoelsmatig hou ik wel van die trouw die nu bij een paar rijders heerst. Vertappen verklaarde de liefde aan Red Bull, Leclerc deed het zelfde bij Ferrari en Norris heeft dit gedaan bij McLaren. Mooi toch?
