Horner baalt niet van mislopen pole: "Het is zeer close"

Ook in de Australische kwalificatie waren de teams van Red Bull Racing en Ferrari weer aan elkaar gewaagd. Carlos Sainz kwam niet in het verhaal voor maar zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc pakte wel de pole. De Red Bulls van Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez kwalificeerde zich respectievelijk als derde en vierde.

De reacties van de coureurs waren na afloop zeer verschillend. Verstappen was gefrustreerd na afloop van de sessie terwijl zijn teamgenoot Perez juist zeer enthousiast was. De kansen voor de race van morgen zijn nog lang en breed niet verkeken en men ziet het dan ook zonnig tegoedmoed. Beide wagens maken immers een goede kans op een goed resultaat.

Lock-up

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner was na afloop van de kwalificatie een tevreden man. De Brit liet dat blijken bij zijn landgenoten van Sky Sports: "Ik ben hier nog steeds heel erg blij mee. We staan tweede en derde op de grid en het is heel erg close. Allebei waren ze op een moment zeer dichtbij de pole. Die lock-up van Max kostte hem drie tienden en dat zou hem dichterbij Charles hebben gebracht."

Porpoising

Horner heeft vanzelfsprekend ook goed gekeken naar de prestaties van de grote concurrent Ferrari. De wagens van de Italiaanse renstal hadden tijdens de kwalificatie heel erg veel last van porpoising. Horner: "Het lijkt erop dat ze nogal last hebben van dat gehobbel. We weten nog niet of ze daar morgen ook last van hebben omdat de long runs niet lang genoeg waren. We weten niet wat voor effect dat zal hebben op de degradatie en andere karakteristieken.

Nou als Ferrari morgen geen last door van het stuiteren krijgt weet ik het niet. Meer dan 50 ronden dat geklapper.. Jack Plooij zal als tandarts het jammer vinden dat hij in Hilversum de wijsneus mag uithangen

  Het verbaast mij dat dit bruinvissen weer de kop op steekt bij Ferrari.
  Wellicht blijft het risico op dit effect bestaan als de limiet op wordt gezocht qua maximum grondeffect van de vloer.

Sainz had wel bijzonder veel pech met die rode vlag waardoor hij geen banker had staan en dus behoorlijk onder druk stond voor dat laatste rondje. Zat na 2 sectoren 9 honderdste achter Leclerc maar vergaloppeerde zich in sector 3 alsnog. In zn eerste poging zat ie overigens onder de tijd van Leclerc totdat die rode vlag kwam. Jammer voor Sainz, maar het zou morgen ook nog wel eens een nadeel kunnen worden voor Leclerc die het nu alleen moet doen.

  En Sainz kon in zijn tweede run niet goed zijn banden opwarmen omdat zijn motor niet meteen gestart kon worden.

Nou misschien krijg je alsnog pole, er is een onderzoek gestart naar de In lap van car nr 16.
