Norris verbaast en crasht: "Was nog een kans om sneller te gaan"

Lando Norris zorgde in Imola voor de vijfde (!) rode vlag van de kwalificatie. De Britse McLaren-coureur schoot rechtdoor en kwam tot stilstand in de grindbak, tegen de muur. Toch kan hij tevreden terug kijken op zijn kwalificatie want hij mag de sprint morgen als derde starten.

Norris was net op tijd terug voor de interviews met de top drie. De medical car bracht hem terug en hij mocht direct zijn zegje doen voor de camera's van de world feed. Hij was redelijk tevreden: "Ik ben blij dat we de top drie hebben bereikt, dan is nogal een verrassing voor ons. Er was nogal wat over in het rondje. Ik probeerde temperatuur in de banden te krijgen omdat ik te hard had gepusht in de outlap."

Jammer

Zijn slippertje was dan ook een fikse teleurstelling voor Norris. Zijn McLaren zag er rap uit in de kwalificatie en de Brit had eigenlijk op iets meer gehoopt: "Het is jammer want er was een kans om tenminste nog sneller te gaan dan Charles. Er was de mogelijkheid om nog verder naar voren te komen omdat de auto goed aanvoelde. Ik had vertrouwen en het is jammer dat het zo moet eindigen. Het is een goede positie voor morgen."

Omstandigheden

De regen was een geschenk uit de hemel voor het team van McLaren. In de droge gedeeltes van de kwalificatie was de Britse bolide namelijk niet zo vlot. Toen de regen weer met bakken uit de hemel kwam ging alles weer voor de wind. Norris: "Het ging steeds beter en beter. Deze omstandigheden hebben vandaag voor ons het verschil gemaakt. Als het helemaal droog was geweest waren we nooit in de top drie terecht gekomen."

Norris heeft iets met regen, op Spa was hij het snelste en crasht, in Rusland regen en hij maakt de verkeerde keuze en nu weer dit akkefietje. Beetje een bipolaire rijder als het op regen aankomt.

Realistisch als altijd, maar onder droge omstandigheden had ik hem toch ook wel in de top 5 of 6 zien kwalificeren.

Zijn spin was jammer; volgens mij was dat exact hetzelfde punt waar hij aan het einde van Q2 ook spinde. In natte omstandigheden over de gladde witte streep rijden is vragen om een spin.

Jammer dat de ware verhoudingen vandaag geheim zijn gebleven, ben benieuwd wat de sprint morgen brengen gaat.

  Met realistisch bedoel ik natuurlijk niet dat hij nog sneller had gekund dan Leclerc, maar vooral dat hij zegt dat hij onder droge omstandigheden node top 3 gehaald zou hebben.

Kans om sneller te gaan was er niet. Verstappen verloor 1,6 seconden in sector 1 zonder een fout te maken en ook achter Verstappen zette niemand groene minisectoren. Leclerc was alle kanten op aan het glijden en had een enorm overstuur moment waarbij hij bijna van de baan vloog. Het was gewoon te nat op dat moment wat ook de reden was waarom Norris van de baan vloog in zijn outlap.

Maar ook het risico dat iemand anders dat zou doen.
Daarom vond ik het verstandiger om P3 veilig te stellen.
