Norris dé verrassing van de dag: "Fantastische race, fantastisch weekend"

Het leek erop dat de Grand Prix van Emilia Romagna zou eindigen in een duel tussen de Red Bulls en Charles Leclerc. De Monegaskische Ferrari-coureur maakte in de slotfase een kapitale fout waardoor hij spinde. Lando Norris profiteerde en kon vrij simpel doorrijden naar een podiumplaats.

De Britse McLaren-coureur kwam als derde over de streep en was met stomheid geslagen. Norris had echter niet zien aankomen dat een podium in Imola erin zat. Het was tevens het tweede Imola-podium op rij voor de talentvolle coureur, vorig jaar werd hij ook al derde in de natte omstandigheden in Emilia Romagna.

Fantastisch

Na afloop was de grijns bij de altijd lachende Norris weer in volle glorie aanwezig. Tegenover interviewer van dienst Marc Gene beaamde hij dat hij dit een verrassing was: "Natuurlijk. Dit was een fantastische race en het was ook een fantastisch weekend. Om een Red Bull en een Ferrari te verslaan, dat is veel beter dan wij hadden verwacht. Ik ben blij en het team verdiende dit vanaf waar we waren in race één. Iedereen verdient dit."

Hard werken

Norris eindigde in Bahrein immers kansloos in het achterveld. Na vier races heeft de knaloranje renstal uit Woking de achterstand echter goed weggepoetst. Norris: "Hard werken. We hebben er veel tijd ingestoken en we hadden vandaag lastige omstandigheden. Ik houd van iedereen en ik doe graag mijn best voor ze. Het is een mix van al het harde werk en dat heeft zich vandaag uitbetaald."

Strak en foutloos vandaag. Helaas (nog) niet snel genoeg om echt te strijden met Ferrari en Red Bull, maar wel op de juiste plek om te profiteren van de fouten en pech van anderen.

Mclaren voert momenteel het middenveld aan en dat is na de openingsrace in Bahrein best wel een meevaller.

Wat mij positief stemt, is dat het gat met de topteams in racepace opnieuw wat kleiner is geworden. Ze leren de MCL36 steeds beter begrijpen en dat is mooi, hij wordt steeds iets sneller en dan te bedenken dat ze nog niet eens noemenswaardige updates hebben geïntroduceerd.

  Dat had ik ook niet verwacht @Politik, maar ben ik ook wel blij mee dat gewoon weer meedoen. Vind het over het algemeen een leuk team. Wel zouden ze, liever gisteren nog dan vandaag, afscheid moeten nemen van Ricciardo. Dat is al een paar seizoenen niks meer en ook dit seizoen is het niks. Probeer dan bijvoorbeeld een Piastri erin te krijgen. Ik begrijp ook echt niet wat mensen wel in Ricciardo zien? Behalve dan dat het naast de baan een leuke persoonlijkheid is, maar daarom moet je niet in een raceauto zitten.

  Na Bahrein dacht ik echt dat dit een dramatische terugval zou worden voor Mclaren. Maar alle credits wel even naar Lando... Zijn punten alleen al zijn gewoon goed genoeg voor P4 bij de constructeurs. Als Mclaren fan begin ik me aardig te storen aan Daniel zijn salaris in combinatie met wat die optafel brengt. De auto lijkt nog wel heel basic qua vormgeving dus ik hoop op nog echt een flinke upgrade zo rond Barcelona.
