Horner legt voordeel Red Bull uit: "Hadden set-up op orde"

Het team van Red Bull Racing sloeg dit weekend toe in het hol van de leeuw. De Oostenrijkse renstal won met kopman Max Verstappen de sprint en de race, de Nederlander veroverde daarnaast ook de pole position. Ook tweede coureur Sergio Perez was sterk en bezorgde zijn team een 1-2tje in de race.

Red Bull versloeg dit weekend op overtuigende wijze de concurrentie van het team van Ferrari. De Italiaanse renstal was op voorhand de favoriet op hun thuiscircuit van Imola. Verstappen was echter de grote winnaar, hij scoorde zeer veel punten en liep in op rivaal Leclerc. De Monegask werd in de sprint in de slotfase bijgehaald door Verstappen en in de race maakte hij een zeer kostbaar foutje.

Leclerc

De dominantie van Red Bull was opvallend aangezien Ferrari bij de vorige race nog met de scepter zwaaide. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner denkt wel te weten waar de plotselinge dominantie vandaan kwam. De Brit legde zijn theorie uit tegenover de internationale media: "We zagen het in Melbourne al met de banden, er is echt een soort window. Ik denk dat we dit weekend de set-up op orde hadden. We zagen dat Charles meer moeite had met de voorbanden dan wij. Dat gold zowel voor de sprint op zaterdag als de zondagse race. Dat gaf ons de overhand en ik denk dat Max de race perfect managede en Checo kon een gat opbouwen ten opzichte van Charles. Buiten zijn tripje over het gras kwamen we nooit in gevaar."

Problemen

In de slotfase van de Grand Prix op Imola leek het erop dat Ferrari een tactisch plan had bedacht. Leclerc dook naar binnen en verliet de pitstraat weer op de softs. Horner denkt echter niet dat deze extra pitstop, waar Red Bull direct op reageerde, een tactische meesterzet was: "Ik denk dat hun voorband problemen kreeg, dus ik denk dat ze wel naar binnen moesten. Ze zagen het verkeer en ze dachten dat ze hun kans konden grijpen omdat Checo in het verkeer reed. Dat ging voor hen echter niet volgens plan. Wij konden reageren met Checo en toen ook met Max waarna we de track position konden vasthouden, op betere banden."

En bij Ferrari was het volgens mij precies andersom, ondanks dat ze geen updates mee hadden genomen hebben ze het qua setup niet voor elkaar gehad. Verschil met slijtage tov Australie is daarvoor te groot.

  Toch apart. Tijdens vt1 had ik echt de indruk dat de Ferrari veel beter was dan Red Bull. Was natuurlijk in het nat, maar ik had ze met mijlen voorsprong op pole verwacht. Ik denk dat Red Bull daarna stappen heeft gezet en het niet meer uit handen heeft gegeven, maar toch opvallend.

  DRS maakte niet veel uit, dat zagen we na de 2e ronde pitstops. Leclerc had toen een paar keer DRS achter Perez, maar liep nauwelijks in. RBR had gewoon een superieure topsnelheid en dat heeft het verschil gemaakt in de gevechten tussen Leclerc en Perez. Vervolgens kon Perez langzaamaan wegrijden dankzij de iets betere bandenmanagement van de RB.

Die stop van Leclerc was volgens mij gewoon volgens planning, gezien de boordradio's over de strategie.

RB had de balans van de auto aanzienlijk kunnen verbeteren. De RB stuurde weer in als een gek....precies zoals Max het graag heeft. Dat was de belangrijkste vooruitgang.
