Horner verklaart late stops: "We zagen dat we onze positie konden behouden"

De slotfase van de Grand Prix van Emilia Romagna van vorige week werd gekenmerkt door een extra reeks pitstops. Ferrari besloot Charles Leclerc naar binnen te roepen voor een verse set banden. Red Bull Racing reageerde door Sergio Perez en later Max Verstappen naar binnen te roepen om hetzelfde te doen.

Het plan van Ferrari leek overduidelijk, Leclerc reed achter de Red Bulls en men wilde de aanval openen. Uiteindelijk viel het slimmigheidje van de Italiaanse renstal in duigen aangezien Leclerc spinde. Door zijn spin raakte zijn voorvleugel beschadigd en moest hij opnieuw een pitstop maken. Hij hield de schade vervolgens redelijk beperkt door als zesde over de streep te komen.

Genoeg

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner geeft aan dat de pitstops van zijn coureurs in ieder geval niet in de planning lagen. De Brit was er tegenover de internationale media nogal duidelijk over: "We hadden nog genoeg over bij de banden om het einde te halen. Voor Charles was het lastig geweest om hem alsnog te pakken na de pitstop. Halverwege het rondje zagen wij dat we onze positie op de baan nog gewoon konden behouden."

Fenomenaal

Perez werd dan ook de pits ingeroepen door het team en hij wisselde zeer snel naar nieuwe banden. Het werd daarna lastig voor Leclerc, al helemaal na zijn ongelukkige spin. Horner: "We hadden een voorsprong van vier seconden op Charles en we besloten een stop te maken. We hebben daarna ook Max voorzien van nieuwe banden. De jongens verrichten een fenomenale pitstop. Ik denk dat het de snelste van het jaar was bij Checo, die van Max was ook snel. Charles had duidelijk voordeel met zijn warme banden maar hij kon nooit echt een poging wagen bij Charles."

  Dat komt omdat Charles achter Charles aanzat, en Charles vond dat niet leuk van Charles en door Charles maakte Charles toen een stuurfoutje waardoor Charles daarna zei dat Charles stupid is. Dat dus.
