Jos Verstappen looft zijn zoon: "Hij is een keiharde racer"

Max Verstappen won afgelopen weekend zijn derde Grand Prix van het seizoen. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur startte in Miami als derde maar sloeg al zeer vroeg toe. De slopende zege kwam als een redelijk verrassing na een moeilijke start van het weekend in de Amerikaanse stad.

Door zijn nieuwe overwinning heeft Verstappen het gat in de WK-stand aardig verkleind. Charles Leclerc gaat nog steeds aan de leiding maar de Monegask kan inmiddels de hete adem van Verstappen in zijn nek voelen. Verstappen heeft dus weer volop kans op een tweede wereldtitel op rij, iets wat een maand geleden nog een utopie leek.

Waanzinnig

Ook Verstappens vader Jos is vol lof over de prestaties van zijn zoon. Verstappen senior moest zelf een rally rijden in België maar genoot van zijn zoon. In zijn column op Verstappen.com spreekt Jos zich uit: "Wat een waanzinnig goed resultaat van Max! Tijdens de race zag hij er opnieuw heel erg sterk uit, en dat na een lastig begin van het weekeinde. Door de problemen kon hij op vrijdag amper rijden en die tijd heb je gewoon nodig om de auto goed af te stellen, zeker op een nieuw stratencircuit. Ik begrijp dan heel goed dat hij wat prikkelbaarder is."

Lastig

Verstappen senior zag dat zijn zoon het in de slotfase nog heel erg lastig had. Het werd nog even billenknijpen maar daarna zat de snelheid er weer goed in. Jos Verstappen: "Max had het eventjes moeilijk, je zag wel echt dat hij aan het trappen was. Hij weet op dat moment precies waar hij mee bezig is. Om eerlijk te zijn had ik wel verwacht dat Leclerc er voorbij zou komen. Met deze DRS-zones was het lastig om een gat te trekken. Gelukkig kon Max de leiding vasthouden, hij is echt een keiharde racer. Je zag na afloop hoe zwaar het was dor de hitte en alle snelle bochten."
