Norris haalt uit naar de FIA: "Wanneer we advies geven, dan moeten ze luisteren"

Afgelopen weekend werd de eerste Grand Prix van Miami afgewerkt. Het gloednieuwe circuit rondom het Hard Rock Stadium viel zeker niet bij elke coureur in de smaak. Sterker nog, er was vanuit de coureurs zeer veel kritiek op de lay-out van de nieuwe baan. Men vond hem zelfs te gevaarlijk.

Het weekend in Miami werd gekenmerkt door de grote hoeveelheid rode vlaggen in de vrije trainingen. Alle drie de trainingen werden stilgelegd vanwege een incident. Twee coureurs, Carlos Sainz en Esteban Ocon, crashte op dezelfde plek en kwamen er niet geheel ongeschonden vanaf. Vlak voor de veelbesproken chicane klapte ze keihard in de betonnen muur en liepen hun bolides flinke schade op. Beide coureurs gaven tevens aan last te hebben van de klap.

Luisteren

De andere coureurs pleitten daarna bij de wedstrijdleiding voor verandering. Men wilde graag een zogenaamde tecpro barrier in de bocht zien maar er werd niet geluisterd. McLaren-coureur Lando Norris is daar niet blij mee en laat dat duidelijk weten aan Motorsport.com: "Wij coureurs leren van onze fouten en ik hoop dat de FIA ook leert van wat er in Miami gebeurde. Als coureurs begrijpen wij dingen die men niet begrijpt als ze niet racen. Wanneer wij advies geven, dan is het belangrijk dat er actie wordt ondernomen. Het gebeurde eenmaal, wij zeiden er wat van en er gebeurde niets! Het gebeurde nogmaals en de gevolgen waren groter, ze moeten luisteren."

Samenwerken

Norris zou graag zien dat de wedstrijdleiding en autosportfederatie FIA beter naar de coureurs luisteren. Hij wijst nogmaals naar het feit dat de coureurs beter weten wat er gevaarlijk is. "Wij zijn de mensen die in deze auto's rijden. Wij weten over de meeste dingen meer dan zij, over andere dingen weten zij dan weer meer. Wij moeten eigenlijk nu beter gaan samenwerken. Op dit moment worden we echter niet gehoord. Het betrof nogal een groot veiligheidsprobleem en het was ook nog eens duur want Ocons chassis wat afgeschreven. Ze moeten echt meer actie ondernemen."

Volgend jaar is het opgelost want dan gaan alle rijders de adviezen van Petertje opvolgen en gewoon op half gas langs alles gevaarlijke plekken. Zo simpel is de oplossing soms.

  Die Petertje heeft echt overal een oplossing voor, dat was echt de ideale opvolger van Masi geweest. Heel erg jammer dat ze hem zomaar over het hoofd hebben gezien.

Dat ze moeten luisteren oke... maar gehoor aan geven is toch wat anders. F1 coureurs adviseren de safetycar ook om 250kph te rijden zodat hun banden warm blijven.

Als t gaat om extra veiligheid... misschien moet de fia dat wel even noteren en er een simulatie oplos laten.

Komt meestal neer op communicatie. Waarschijnlijk voelt hij dat zo maar als de wedstrijdleiding communiceert waarom ze daar (nu) niets mee doen beseffen ze dat ze wel gehoord zijn maar dat ze om bepaalde redenen (nog) niet hun zin gekregen hebben.

Ik volg naast F1 ook naar MotoGP en WRC. Van die 3 raceklassen hebben F1-coureurs het minst over veiligheid te klagen maar janken ze er het hardst over. Ondertussen rijden rallyauto’s tegen bomen aan en vallen ze van kliffen af. En maken motorcoureurs klappen op het asfalt met 300km/u. Die hele klaagzang van F1-coureurs, in hun beschermde kooien met safety barrières aan alle kanten van het circuit kan ik echt niet serieus nemen. Het is zo’n beetje de veiligste vorm van motorsport die er is.

Om met de woorden van Seidl te spreken, “dan rijd je toch gewoon niet”. Ja, zo simpel is het.
