Seidl in zijn nopjes met nieuwe wedstrijdleiders: "Ik houd daarvan"

Sinds dit seizoen werkt de Formule 1 met twee wedstrijdleiders die de functie afwisselend waarnemen. Niels Wittich en Eduardo Freitas zijn de vervangers van de weggestuurde Michael Masi. Vooralsnog heeft Wittich tijdens alle races de functie waargenomen, Freitas is aankomend weekend aan de beurt in Barcelona.

Vooralsnog hebben de nieuwe wedstrijdleiders nog niet voor een grote rel gezorgd. De meeste opschudding is tot nu toe ontstaan door de verscherpte sieradenregels. De beslissingen over de acties op de baan krijgen vooralsnog weinig kritiek. Sinds dit jaar werken ze ook met de ondersteuning van een soort VAR, de zogenaamde virtual control room.

Goede start

Bij het team van McLaren zijn ze in ieder geval zeer in hun nopjes met het duo Wittich en Freitas. Teambaas Andreas Seidl is vol complimenten en deelt dat met Motorsport.com: "Ik wil dit niet gaan vergelijken met het verleden want we waren ook heel erg tevreden met de werkrelatie in de vorige opzet. Ik vind dat deze opzet met Niels en Eduardo een goede start heeft gemaakt in dit nieuwe tijdperk van de sport."

Handhaving

Seidl kan wel leven met de vervangers van Masi. Wittich en Freitas hebben al de nodige ervaring en Freitas is daarnaast ook nog actief in het WEC. Seidl: "Niels is echt heel erg rechtlijnig in de handhaving van de regels. Daarnaast is hij ook heel erg duidelijk in wat hij verwacht. Ik houd daar echt van. Hij staat tegelijkertijd ook open voor een gesprek en input, evenals voor dingen waarvan je denkt dat ze anders moeten. Als je het aan mij vraagt denk ik dat we er goed voor staan."

We hebben er pas één aan het werk gezien, dus een oordeel is het vroeg. Dan is er ook nog eens niets spannends gebeurd. Vorig jaar was uiteraard ook nog eens uniek.

  Tot nu toe ben ik tevreden. Zie zeker een verbetering waarbij ze niet onmiddellijk naar de rode vlag grijpen maar waarbij ze eerst een VSC doen om pas als het duidelijk wordt dat het niet anders kan, de SC de baan op te sturen.
