Horner kritisch: "Als Monaco nieuw was, dan stond het niet op de kalender"

Dit weekend staat de Spaanse Grand Prix op het programma. Veel fans kijken echter al reikhalzend uit naar het volgende week, dan staat immers de legendarische Grand Prix van Monaco op het programma. De race in het dwergstaatje is altijd een hoogtepunt op de kalender. 

Maar Monaco is niet langer een onaangetaste parel op de kalender. Eerder dit jaar gingen er zelfs geruchten rond dat de race zomaar van de kalender kon verdwijnen. Daarnaast is het stratencircuit vermoedelijk ook veel te krap voor de huidige generatie Formule 1-wagens. Dat zou dus betekenen dat inhalen zeer moeilijk gaan worden op de baan door de straten van Monaco.

Kroonjuweel

Ook vanuit de teams klinken steeds vaker kritische geluiden richting de Monegaskische Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing-teambaas laat tegenover Motorsport.com bijvoorbeeld weten dat het een bijzondere zaak is: "Je kan je de Formule 1 zonder Monaco onmogelijk voorstellen. Het is echt een kroonjuweel maar alles verandert in de loop van de tijd. Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens naar Wimbledon, ze hebben daar tegenwoordig een dak als het regent. Daar moesten ze ook actie ondernemen omdat de sport bleef groeien. Als Monaco een nieuw circuit was, dan was het nooit op de kalender gezet."

Achteruit

Monaco heeft een bijzondere positie. De organisatie betaalt bijvoorbeeld een veel lagere fee om op de kalender te staan. De Grand Prix krijgt dan ook steeds meer te maken met kritiek. Ook Horner hoopt dat er snel veranderingen gaan komen: "Monaco staat op onze kalender vanwege de grote traditie en de historie, dat is echt alles. Ik denk echt dat je moet gaan evolueren. Je moet echt verder want als je stilstaat ga je achteruit. Dat geldt trouwens voor alle aspecten van de sport."

      Is alleen al de lengte van de baan niet te kort voor een F1 race? Monaco zat daar net onder dacht ik.

      Klopt. De Monaco GP voldoet niet aan de minimaal vereiste race lengte van 300km. De volledige 300km is niet haalbaar binnen 2uur i.v.m. de lage gemiddelde snelheid

      Monaco F1 stamt uit een heel ander tijdperk van de autosport.
      Het is een stratencircuit in een stad. Je kunt de lay-out niet veranderen (tenzij je de halve stad sloopt).
      Horner heeft helemaal gelijk, maar ja het is traditie. Net als Kerstmis met de familie: gewoon door de zure appel, en je lam zuipen, en dan over tot de orde van de dag.

    Monaco moet gewoon blijven klaar !! Al denk ik wel dat ze het een en ander mogen aanpassen. Echter moet Monaco, Monaco blijven en geen goedkope Baku of Miami.

    Ik snap wat Horner zegt. Ik ben het alleen niet met hem eensch.

    Monaco hoort op de F1 kalender, want... Monaco!

    Monaco is uniek. Monaco is historie. F1 heeft historische circuits nodig en Monaco is op dat vlak het summum. De binding met het roemruchte verleden van de F1 mag niet zomaar over boord gekiept worden anders trek je de ziel uit de F1.
    En besef goed, als Monaco eenmaal van de kalender verdwenen is, zijn we het voorgoed kwijt.

    Het zou beter zijn als men (zoals Newey ook al zegt) de auto's weer kleiner, smaller en lichter maakt. Dan wordt het racen daar ook minder lastig.

    Handen af van Monaco, en heel snel. die moet er blijven. heel die race zal mij gestolen kunnen worden, maar de trainingen en kwali zijn daar het allerleukst.

    Ik vind monaco één van de leukste races. Constante spanning. Je kan inderdaad moeilijk inhalen. Maar dat is 100x beter dan circuits waar je kan inhalen omdat er een recht stuk is van 3 kilometer. DRS open, ff voorbij en verder. Leuk man.

    Als mijn vader mijn moeder was tegen gekomen toen hij 25 was en zij 75 was het ook niks moois geworden. Nu ze beide 75 zijn gaat het al 50 jaar goed.

    Het is al knap dat er een weg is in dat Madurodam.

    Monaco heeft een lengte van 3,2 km en een breedte van 135 tot 910 m en de breedte van de grenzen variëren tussen de 350 en 1000

    meter.

    De kustlijn van het ministaatje is in totaal 4100 meter lang.

    Monaco is een fantastisch circuit maar al jaren te smal voor de wagens. Flikker al die andere stratencircuits van de kalender en er is niks aan de hand.
    Monaco is fantastisch om te zijn en de gp mee te maken en hoort gewoon op de kalender thuis.
