Häkkinen prijst strategie van Red Bull Racing

He team van Red Bull Racing had afgelopen weekend te maken met een groot luxeprobleem. Allebei de coureurs hadden immers een grote kans op de overwinning in de Spaanse Grand Prix. Sergio Perez kreeg echter te horen dat hij zijn teamgenoot Max Verstappen moest laten passeren aangezien beide coureurs op een andere strategie zaten.

Verstappen kon uiteindelijk de zege relatief binnen slepen nadat zijn team een zeer slimme strategie had bedacht. Het idee legde ze geen windeieren maar ging wel ten koste van Perez. De Mexicaan moest zijn teammaat laten passeren en bezocht de pits voor een vers setje banden. Uiteindelijk kwam hij als tweede over de streep.

Strategie

Na afloop was er veel lof voor het team van Red Bull Racing. De Oostenrijkse renstal zag namelijk dat Verstappen DRS-problemen had en bedacht daarna de nieuwe strategie. Ook tweevoudig wereldkampioen Mika Häkkinen spreekt zich lovend uit in zijn column voor Unibet: "Red Bull heeft uitstekend werk geleverd door Verstappen een strategie te geven waarmee hij kon winnen. Toen zijn DRS-systeem niet werkte kwamen ze tot de realisatie dat een driestopper de juiste strategie was."

Teamplayer

De Finse oud-coureur zag dat Red Bull in Spanje zeer tactisch bezig was. Ze waren niet alleen tactisch bezig met de race, maar eveneens met het wereldkampioenschap. Häkkinen verklaart de zaak: "De strategie van het team gaf Verstappen de winst want ze weten dat elk punt telt in dit kampioenschap. Ze wisten ook dat Max door het technische probleem achterop was geraakt. Deze teams willen kampioen worden en Perez is de ultieme teamplayer voor Verstappen. Het moet echt extreem lastig zijn geweest voor hem om de zege weg te geven."

TTT, zeker weten. En dat is gegroeid in de periode vanaf 2014. Sinds invoering van de V6-hybrid heeft Red Bull continue de Mercedes in de kont moeten kijken. Dan kan je alleen winnen als je slimmer bent qua strategie dan de concurrent. En daar hebben ze zich goed in bekwaamd.

Ik heb het idee dat RBR vaak tactisch wat slimmer is dan de andere topteams. Of in ieder geval dat ze vaker het initiatief durfen te nemen en daar vaak ook voor beloond worden.

Vreemd, als Mika het inderdaad zo beleefd heeft, voor mij zag het er nooit naar uit dat PER een reële kans op de winst had.

  Als team zouden ze evenveel punten hebben binnengehaald, of nou Max of Perez de race had gewonnen... De ander was sowieso tweede geworden..... ;)
  Als je kijkt naar wie er meer kans maakt om het WDC te winnen (en dan doet de huidige stand nog niet ter zake), dan wil je liever dat Max wint, omdat hij hoogstwaarschijnlijk meer constant podiumplaatsen haalt...

  Laat dat “hoogstwaarschijnlijk” maar weg @mario…..;)
  Perez had sowieso geen kans, Max had op dat moment veel versere banden. Perez had het einde op die banden mogelijk niet gehaald, en moest nog een stop maken. Ook door de extra stop van Russell moest hij wel, anders had hij zelfs de tweede plek nog kunnen verliezen.
