Montoya ziet slimmer Red Bull: "Niet bang om agressiever te zijn"

De teams van Red Bull Racing en Ferrari vormen dit seizoen de kop van het veld. De Ferrari's zijn regelmatig sneller maar Red Bull, en dan vooral Max Verstappen, heeft veruit de meeste zeges gepakt. Verstappen heeft dit seizoen slechts drie races niet gewonnen, Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc won er eentje en in Monaco won Red Bull-coureur Sergio Perez.

Verstappen is dit weekend in Silverstone dan ook de grote favoriet voor de zege in de Britse Grand Prix. De Nederlander gaat aan de leiding in het wereldkampioenschap en zijn team heeft zeer veel vertrouwen. Bij Ferrari wil men toeslaan maar de Italianen trappen steeds maar weer in de val van Red Bull.

Winnen

Ook voormalig Formule 1-coureur Juan Pablo Montoya ziet Verstappen als de grote favoriet voor het Britse Grand Prix-weekend. De Colombiaan ziet in gesprek met VegasInsider een voordeel voor Verstappen: "Ik denk dat het belangrijkste voor hem nu is dat hij recent veel races heeft gewonnen. Wanneer je begint te winnen komt alles samen. Je moet het zo zien: Zelfs als je niet de snelste bent win je races. Het team helpt met de strategie om te winnen. Wanneer hij niet won, was het zijn teamgenoot. Bij Ferrari won alleen Charles."

Strategie

Montoya ziet dan ook een wezenlijk verschil tussen de aanpak van Ferrari en de aanpak van Red Bull. Hij verwijst daarbij naar de titelstrijd van vorig jaar: "Alles aan de mindset van Red Bull klopt. Ferrari begint het weekend door zich af te vragen hoe ze gaan winnen. Dat vragen ze zich zelfs af als ze de snelste auto hebben want ze gooien overwinningen weg. In Monaco had Leclerc een voorsprong maar gooide hij de zege weg omdat Ferrari te conservatief was, Red Bull was slimmer en won. Daar wordt het moeilijk, Red Bull steekt qua strategie nu met kop en schouders boven Ferrari uit. Red Bull moest de afgelopen jaren echt een stapje extra zetten omdat Mercedes sneller was. Ze moesten steeds slimmer zijn. Ze zijn niet bang om agressiever te zijn."

Ferrari wil te snel te snel zijn in een weekend. RB heeft een aanloop aanpak, met vooral in de race een sterke wagen. De Ferrari is gelijk snel. maar het gaat om zondag.

Waar komt dit gewichtsverlies vandaan, van de nieuwe engine cover misschien ?
