Het team van McLaren probeert al geruime tijd de overstap te maken naar de kop van het veld. De Britse renstal krabbelde in de afgelopen jaren uit een diep dal. Dit seizoen zet de stijgende lijn niet volledig door, coureur Lando Norris is wel weer bezig met een sterk seizoen. Teambaas Andreas Seidl weet wat er moet gebeuren.

McLaren leek vorig seizoen uit te groeien tot een uitdager van de topteams. De Britse renstal won met Daniel Ricciardo de Italiaanse Grand Prix en Norris was dichtbij de zege in Rusland. Dit seizoen is alles anders en vecht McLaren hard mee in het middenveld. De resultaten zijn zeker niet slecht maar de weg omhoog blijkt wel wat langer te zijn dan men had verwacht.

Verschil

Teambaas Andreas Seidl weet met al zijn ervaring wat er precies aan de hand is. Seidl ziet namelijk een wezenlijk verschil met Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. Tegenover Sport Bild spreekt hij zich uit: "Het is altijd het plan om een auto te maken die net zo snel is in Monaco als in Silverstone. Dat is nog steeds het punt waar de top teams het verschil maken. Daarom liggen wij nog achter op hen. Maar ik wil alles positief zien en ik wil alle ervaringen, positief en negatief, gebruiken voor de toekomst. Zelfs kleine tegenvallers kunne positief zijn."

Wolken

Seidl wil dan ook veel leren van de mindere resultaten in het huidige seizoen. De teambaas van McLaren heeft er dan ook goed over nagedacht: "De zon scheen voor drie jaar maar daarna kwamen er ineens wolken om de hoek kijken. Ik zie het ook als een soort test om constructief terug te kijken op de afgelopen drie jaar. Hoe ver zijn we echt gekomen met de innovaties in de organisatie van het team? Dat is de sleutel."

Misschien dat met een frisse motorleverancier (en financier...) vanaf het moment van de nieuwe motorenformule in 2026, McLaren nog een kans maakt op een echte terugkeer naar de absolute top, maar ik vrees dat voorlopig (de komende jaren) dit team 'mee blijft hobbelen' met de subtop. Niet alleen zijn ze geen fabrieksteam, maar de Benz power is heden ten dage ook niet meer zo overweldigend (groter) dan die van de directe concurrentie. Persoonlijk zou ik dit team weer erg graag zien meeknokken voor de titel, maar de gevestigde orde (Benz, RBR en Ferrari) is vooralsnog te sterk en hun voorsprong te groot. Om in ieder geval de 'exposure' van dit team de komende periode te vergroten zal het m.i. helpen om in ieder geval een puik functionerende en (voor de fans) aansprekende (2e) coureur aan te trekken, want met Daniel lijkt het niet meer te gaan lukken.

  Ik denk dat het meer over Norris zegt dat over Daniël.
  Bij Renault reed hij Ocon gewoon naar huis, met als Alonso nu doet.
  Ricciardo is niet veel langzamer, Norris is gewoon echt veel beter dan veel denken.

Klaarblijkelijk is dit wat het is. Voor mij is er geen progressie. McLaren strijdt net als vorig jaar om de vierde plaats. Men is een lichtjaar verwijderd van de top drie.

Seidl geeft terecht aan, dat de topteams op bijna alle circuits een snellere auto hebben, dit in tegenstelling tot Mclaren. Maar hij vergeet nog één belangrijke factor te benoemen; in kwalificatie trim doet die Mclaren het best aardig, maar zodra de race aanvangt en de tank vol is, keldert de performance dramatisch. Imo is dat het zwakste punt van de Mclaren.

Mijn hoop is gevestigd op de komst van de splinternieuwe en geavanceerde infrastructuur eind van dit jaar en begin volgend jaar. Daarnaast toch maar eens kijken of er toch geen deal met bijvoorbeeld Audi gesloten kan worden. De voordelen die je als fabrieksteam hebt, kunnen uiteindelijk echt de doorslaggevende factor zijn.
