Norris ziet opvallend probleem: "We verliezen veel in de DRS-zones"

Lando Norris beleefde in België een wisselvallig weekend. De Britse McLaren-coureur kwam in de vrije trainingen aardig voor de dag en wist dat hij voor de race een motorstraf zou ontvangen. In de race wist hij zich echter niet naar voren te vechten en bleef hij steken op een vervelende twaalfde plaats.

Norris reed een vrij kleurloze race en zat in de slotfase vast in het treintje auto's achter de Williams van Alexander Albon. Na afloop overheerste er dan ook teleurstelling, het leek er immers op dat er veel meer mogelijk was. Norris merkte na de race dat zijn snelheid eigenlijk helemaal niet zo slecht was, de pace was namelijk best wel goed.

DRS

Het resultaat zorgde voor de nodige teleurstelling bij Norris. De Brit had op mee gehoopt maar zag ook dat er één grote zwakte was in België. Na afloop werd hij geciteerd door RaceFans: "Ik denk dat we waarschijnlijk één van de snelste teams zijn op de rechte stukken. We verliezen alleen veel in de DRS-zones. Op een of andere manier zijn we best slecht met de DRS. Sommige auto's zijn beter dan de anderen. Ik denk dat we in pure snelheid op de rechte stukken sneller zijn dan Red Bull."

Verschil

Norris ziet dat het verschil met Red Bull ineens veel groter wordt zodra men de DRS-zone inrijdt. De Brit zoekt naar oplossingen van het opvallende probleem: "Zodra Red Bull de DRS opent gaan ze ineens 15 kilometer per uur sneller en zijn ze een competitie op zichzelf. We missen iets met de DRS en misschien zorgt dat ervoor dat we minder goed kunnen inhalen dan anderen. Maar in een rechte lijn waren we dit weekend waarschijnlijk de snelste."

Dat dacht ik ook. Tot dit jaar. Met wat mij tot nu opvalt dit jaar laat juist zien dat voor sommige teams de drs veel meer snelheid brengt dan zonder.
Even Spa buiten beschouwing, want daar was Red Bull met en zonder drs sneller dan de grote concurenten.

Het kan ook zijn dat de motor van de RB18 in standje "overtake" veel meer vermogen heeft.

Hij geeft aan dat ze in de rechte lijn het snelste waren, als je al met weinig vleugen rijdt dan heeft de DRS lijkt mij ook minder nut?

  Op andere circuits is dat tot nu anders geweest. Zonder drs/slipstream hadden vaak in de race Red Bull en Ferrari ongeveer de zelfde snelheid. Als je dan bedenkt dat Red Bull een low drag auto heeft, zou ik hebben verwacht dat het effect van drs klein is. Echter bleek tot nu dat juist met drs open de Red Bull veel sneller is in de races dan Ferrari met de drs open.
  Die Newey en zijn team hebben echt slimme dingen bedacht voor de auto.

Dit is of geklets van niks of een vertaalfout. Als je denkt sneller te zijn op het rechte stuk, ben je dat ook met DRS.

  Niet per direct... Als op een of andere wijze een openstaande DRS systeem drastisch meer drag creeerd dan bij andere teams (wanneer hun DRS open staat) dan betekent dit dat bijvoorbeeld een geringe top snelheid voordeel zonder DRS, veranderd in een topsnelheid nadeel met DRS.
  
  Het kan bijvoorbeeld ook zo zijn dat de DRS lift creeert waardoor de hele auto met DRS hoger gaat staan en er iets van grip verliest en meer drag heeft.
  
  Er zijn best veel dingen mogelijk eigenlijk... Maar normaliter heb je inderdaad gelijk.
  
  De Mclaren is dit jaar sowieso wel aardig lomp en simpel qua vormgeving. De 2021 auto zag er een stuk agressiever uit.

Stel dat de woorden van Lando waar zijn en McLaren is de koning van de rechte lijn speed dan moeten ze ipv Daniël natuurlijk ook de koning van de rechte lijn, Sir Lancelot Stroll, in die auto hebben!
Piastri naar Aston naast Alonso 😂 en Sir Lancelot naar McLaren. It all makes sense now
