Häkkinen begrijpt teleurstelling om Safety Car-finish Monza

De Italiaanse Grand Prix eindigde afgelopen weekend op een zeer ongelukkige manier. Aangezien Daniel Ricciardo was stilgevallen moest de Safety Car de baan opkomen. Het opruimen van de McLaren duurde echter zeer lang waardoor de race achter de Safety Car finishte. Ook Mika Häkkinen was hier niet bepaald tevreden mee.

Veel teams en coureurs rekenden op een herstart op het circuit van Monza. Veel coureurs werden dan ook naar binnen geroepen voor een vers setje zachte banden. Niemand kon echter profiteren van die tactische zet omdat de race dus finishte achter de Safety Car. De fans waren zeer ontevreden en vanaf de tribunes rondom het circuit van Monza daalde een fluitconcert neer.

Teleurstelling

Ook veel coureurs, teambazen en kenners waren niet te spreken over de manier waarop de race finishte. Ook tweevoudig wereldkampioen Mika Häkkinen had het graag anders gezien. De Fin bespreekt de situatie in zijn column voor Unibet: "Het was een grote teleurstelling voor de fans en de televisiekijkers. Maar de FIA moet de veiligheid voorop stellen en de marshalls die de auto van Ricciardo opruimden moesten worden beschermd. Dat was het belangrijkste."

Balans

Häkkinen begrijpt de teleurstelling over de finish van de race. De Finse oud-coureur hoopt dat de situatie door de FIA goed bekeken gaat worden. Hij is er nogal duidelijk over in zijn column: "Het zou fantastisch zijn als er een manier wordt gevonden om dut soort resultaten te vermijden in de toekomst. Maar alles moet wel op een manier worden gedaan om een balans te vinden tussen entertainment en de veiligheid van de betrokkenen."
