Wat is het zwakke punt van Perez? "Je moet consistent zijn"

Het onderlinge verschil tussen Sergio Perez en zijn Red Bull Racing-teamgenoot Max Verstappen was dit jaar zeer groot. De Mexicaan had een enorme achterstand op Verstappen. Volgens Mika Häkkinen komt deze achterstand vooral door het gebrek aan consistentie bij Perez.

Terwijl Verstappen in 2023 slechts één keer niet op het podium stond, waren de resultaten van Perez veel wisselvalliger. Hij wisselende geweldige weekenden af met enorme missers. Halverwege het seizoen beleefde hij een teleurstellende reeks waarin hij meerdere keren al vroeg afviel in de kwalificatie. Dit resulteerde in inhaalraces waarin hij soms ver naar voren wist te komen, maar waarin hij vaak ook in het middenveld bleef hangen.

Het contract van Perez loopt eind 2024 af en dat betekent dat hij moet presteren. De kritiek is nog niet verdwenen, tweevoudig wereldkampioen Mika Häkkinen wijst in het Viaplay-programma F1 Talks naar het zwakke punt van Perez: "Je moet heel erg consistent zijn als je met het team werkt. Bij Checo gaat het op en neer. Het team kan daar helemaal geen informatie uit halen om de auto te ontwikkelen op de manier zoals hij dat wil. Als hij dat zou doen, dan geeft dat Max een voordeel. Of dat nu het geval is bij de banden, de set-up of iets anders."
