Breaking: Gasly verlaat AlphaTauri en tekent voor meerdere jaren bij Alpine

Het hing al een tijdje in de lucht: Pierre Gasly rijdt vanaf 2023 voor Alpine en vervangt de vertrekkende Fernando Alonso. Door de komst van Gasly en de al aanwezige Esteban Ocon heeft de Franse renstal een volledige line-up van eigen bodem.

Officieel had Gasly nog een contract bij Red Bull voor 2023, maar dat is dus in goed overleg ontbonden. Of Alpine een afkoopsom moest betalen aan de Oostenrijkers is nog niet bekend gemaakt. Sinds 2014 maakte Gasly uit van de Red Bull-famille.

In 2016 werd de Fransman in de GP2 (F2) kampioen. Dat leverde hem een stoeltje op bij Scuderia Toro Rosso (AlphaTauri) in het einde het van het seizoen van 2017. Hij verving de tegenvallende Daniil Kvyat. Het jaar daarop werd Gasly fulltime-coureur bij STR en verving Carlos Sainz die naar Renault (Alpine) vertrok.

In 2019 mocht de Fransman onverwachts plaatsnemen naast Max Verstappen bij de hoofdmacht. Daniel Ricciardo besloot plotseling om ook een nieuw avontuur te beginnen bij Renault en daardoor kwam er een zitje vrij. Gasly viel echter tegen en nadat Verstappen hem op een ronde zette in Hongarije besloot de Red Bull-leiding hem terug te sturen naar het zusterteam. Alexander Albon bewandelde de omgekeerde weg.

Gasly's redemption kwam bij de Braziliaanse Grand Prix van dat 2019-seizoen waarbij hij dankzij een Safety Car en de clash tussen Albon en Hamilton een sensationele tweede plaats behaalde. De schreeuw over de boordradio was legendarisch.

Gasly wilde dolgraag een tweede kans, bleef bij STR dat verder ging als AlphaTauri, maar zag in dat die tweede mogelijkheid niet zou komen. Ondanks een verbluffend seizoen in 2021 met een verrassende overwinning op Monza gaf Red Bull Bull de voorkeur voor een lid buiten de familie: Sergio Pérez. Betere opties waren er niet voor Gasly en bleef bij het team.

Red Bull wilde Gasly de komende jaren behouden voor AlphaTauri vanwege zijn ervaring en komst van de nieuwe generaties bolides vanaf 2022, maar liet wel doorschemeren om Gasly niet in de weg te staan bij een eventuele droomtransfer in de toekomst.

Had ik even niet aan zien komen, 😜
Evengoed wens ik hem een geweldige tijd bij Alpine, ik hoop dan ook dat hij Ocon met pek en veren verslaat (je collega is je eerste tegenstander)
Ondanks dat ik Gasly een middelmatig coureur vind verwacht ik dat ie best op z’n plek komt bij Alpine !
