Jos Verstappen verwacht geen rallyconcurrentie van Max: "Hij verklaart mij voor gek!"

Jos Verstappen is tegenwoordig weer te vinden aan de start van competitieve autosportevenementen. De Nederlandse voormalig Formule 1-coureur neemt dit jaar deel aan meerdere rally's in België. Afgelopen weekend kwam hij ook in actie in Nederland. Hij vermaakt zich opperbest met zijn nieuwe avontuur.

Jos Verstappen werd in de afgelopen jaren vooral bekend als 'de vader van'. De oud-coureur stond aan de wieg van de extreem succesvolle loopbaan van zijn zoon Max Verstappen. De Red Bull-coureur is momenteel hard op weg naar zijn tweede wereldtitel en zijn vader is minder aanwezig bij de successen van zijn zoon. Jos Verstappen geniet van de prestaties van zijn zoon en presteert zelf steeds beter in de rally's.

Inrollen

Afgelopen weekend reed Jos Verstappen in de Hellendoorn Rally. Hij rijdt dit jaar meerdere rally's maar het feit dat hij daar nu rijdt heeft niets te maken met de groeiende zelfstandigheid van zijn zoon. Tegenover de Volkskrant spreekt Jos zich uit: "Ik ben hier gewoon ingerold. Het klopt dat ik er in het begin meer bij betrokken was dan nu. Ik heb mijn stapjes teruggedaan. Maar het is wel fijn als je zelf een uitdaging hebt."

Langs de bomen

Jos Verstappen verwacht niet dat zijn zoon ooit een keertje aan de start van een rally verschijnt. Verstappen senior heeft het er wel over gehad en begint met een knipoog: "Hij verklaart mij voor gek! Nee, hahaha. Hij vindt het wel leuk maar zo vlak langs die bomen rijden, dat vindt hij niets. Maar dat had ik ook toen ik zo jong was. Dat komt dan nog wel. Hij is nu met andere dingen bezig."
