Horner eert Mateschitz: "We zijn gewoon erg dankbaar voor alles wat hij heeft gedaan"

Gisteravond werd vlak voor de start van de kwalificatie van de Amerikaanse Grand Prix duidelijk dat Dieter Mateschitz was overleden. De oprichter van het merk Red Bull was al geruime tijd ziek maar zijn overlijden kwam toch als een schok. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner reageerde dan ook met veel verdriet.

Mateschitz was de geestenvader achter het team van Red Bull. De Oostenrijker richtte het energiedrankjesmerk op en stond sinds 2005 op de grid met het team. Met Red Bull werd Sebastian Vettel in 2010, 2011, 2012 en 2013 wereldkampioen. Max Verstappen greep vorig seizoen de wereldtitel en hij deed dat twee weken geleden in Japan nog eens dunnetjes over.

Verschil maken

Horner gaf in Austin zijn eerbetoon aan Mateschitz vlak voor de start van de kwalificatie. De Brit was bedroeft maar sprak enkele mooie woorden bij Sky Sports: "Wat hij heeft bereikt en heeft gedaan voor zoveel mensen in zoveel sporten over de hele wereld, we konden echt niet beter wensen. Velen van ons moeten zo ontzettend dankbaar zijn voor de kansen die hij heeft gegeven. De visie en kracht die hij had, hij was nooit bang om dromen na te jagen en dat heeft hij gedaan hier in de Formule 1. Hij bewees dat je een verschil kon maken."

Dankbaar

Horner heeft eigenlijk maar één zin nodig om Mateschitz te kunnen omschrijven. De Brit deed er voor de microfoon van zijn landgenoten zeker niet moeilijk over: "We zijn gewoon erg dankbaar voor alles wat hij heeft gedaan. Zoveel coureurs, zoveel mensen in het tam, zoveel mensen in de pits hebben veel aan hem te danken. Hij was gepassioneerd over de sport en het team. We zijn vastberaden om voor hem het beste te doen."

  uiteindelijk zijn het allemaal marketingtools om zijn redbull drankjes aan de man te brengen. maar zelf is hij natuurlijk wel een grote fan van de motorsport.

Vlak voordat gisteravond onze tijd het droevige nieuws RBR bereikte,
waren Newey en Horner weer met Suayem in gesprek.

As can now be heard, the cost cap administrators of the FIA and Red Bull
have agreed on a penalty behind the scenes.
It was supposed to be communicated in Austin during the weekend.
Out of piety they will now wait a few days.

  Kennelijk zijn de heren het eens geworden over een gepaste straf, maar vanwege het overlijden van meneer Mateschitz wordt met het vertellen van de uitkomst een paar dagen gewacht.

  Wat een grap. Het is toch van de zotte dat de FIA het eens moet worden met RB over een straf? De FIA, RB en de F1 zetten zichzelf weer eens op de kaart. Wat een aanfluiting.

  Het is van de zotte dat Red Bull überhaupt beschuldigd is van fraude. Ze hebben alles goed gedaan, maar de fia vindt dat ze een team moeten bestraffen.
