Horner verrast door strategische keuze Mercedes in Mexico

Afgelopen weekend in Mexico gingen de teams van Red Bull Racing en Mercedes de strijd met elkaar aan. Red Bull trok uiteindelijk zoals gewoonlijk weer aan het langste eind, Max Verstappen greep de zege. Christian Horner was verrast door de strategische keuzes van Mercedes in Mexico.

Verstappen en zijn Mercedes-rivalen George Russell en Lewis Hamilton startten op compleet verschillende strategieën. Verstappen begon de race op een zachte band om daarna te wisselen naar de mediums. De Mercedes-coureurs begonnen echter op de mediums om daarna te wisselen naar de hards, het bleek alles behalve de juiste strategie op het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Verrast

Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner was verrast door de strategische keuzes van Mercedes. De Brit had een veel aanvallender Mercedes verwacht. In gesprek met de internationale media in Mexico gaf Horner zijn visie op de zaak: "We hadden onze strategie in Mexico helemaal op orde. Van de softs naar de mediums zag er uit als een snellere race. Met de mediums en de hards, dan heb je gewoonlijk niet zoveel grip. We waren dan ook verrast dan Mercedes zo conservatief was met de strategie."

Zege verspillen

Een andere strategie had het sterk rijdende Mercedes misschien wel kunnen helpen in Mexico-Stad. Horner denkt echter dat zijn manschappen alsnog hadden gewonnen bij een andere strategie van Mercedes: "Ik denk dat we nog steeds een voordeel zouden hebben. Ze waren wel een stuk dichter bij de zege geweest. Je merkte dat de coureurs niet tevreden waren met de hards. Weet je, dit is het tweede raceweekend op rij dan ze die band gebruiken en dat het ze misschien wel de zege kost. Ik vond het verrassend."
