Sargeant 'voelt geen extra druk' als Amerikaanse F1-coureur

Logan Sargeant neemt vanaf 2023 deel aan het Formule 1 veld. De coureur is aangetrokken door het team van Williams en heeft zodoende ook al deelgenomen aan de naseizoenstest op het Yas Marina circuit. Tegenover verslaggevers meent Sargeant dat hij als enige Amerikaanse Formule 1-coureur zijnde geen extra druk op zijn schouders voelt.

Logan Sargeant zal vanaf volgend seizoen officieel een Formule 1-rookie zijn. De Formule 2-coureur van Carlin werd in oktober van dit jaar aangekondigd als de nieuwste aanwinst van Williams, op voorwaarde dat Sargeant genoeg Superlicentiepunten behaalde. In de laatste race van het Formule 2-seizoen wist de coureur genoeg punten binnen te sprokkelen, wat betekende dat zijn promotie naar de koningsklasse officieel was.

"Ik heb er net zoals ieder ander keihard voor gewerkt. Ik zal mijn uiterste best moeten doen om mij zo goed mogelijk voor te bereiden op volgend jaar. Hopelijk zal mijn harde werken voldoende zijn om voor een lange tijd in de Formule 1 te kunnen blijven", vertelt Sargeant tegenover ESPN.

In de Verenigde Staten ziet de Formule 1 deels vanwege de Netflix-serie "Drive to Survive" een enorme groei. Op de vraag of er daarom extra druk op zijn schouders rust, antwoordt Sargeant: "Ik ervaar geen extra druk. Ik heb de allerhoogste verwachtingen voor mijzelf. Ik heb tot nu toe een goede carrière in de Formule-series gehad en ben nu bezig om het ene hoofdstuk af te sluiten en door te gaan naar de volgende."

Sargeant zal niet de enige rookie zijn die zich vanaf volgend seizoen mag mengen met de crème de la crème van de autosport; AlphaTauri heeft Formule 2- en Formule E-kampioen Nyck de Vries tot zich toegetrokken, McLaren heeft gekozen voor mede Formule 2-kampioen Oscar Piastri. Over de laatstgenoemde coureur spreekt Sargeant: "We zijn al vrienden sinds we karten. Ik ben blij met zijn voortgang en ik hoop dat we allebei succesvol in de Formule 1 kunnen worden."

Waarom zou je ook. Echt succes is voor d VS lang lang geleden. Kijk als je nou een Brit of Duitser bent... dan wordt er wel echt iets van je verwacht

Het is weinigen gegeven om zoals Latifi 3 jaar in de F1 rond te rijden zonder enig noemenswaardig resultaat te boeken. De meeste zijn dan al na 1 of maximaal 2 seizoenen eruit gezet. Er is dus druk voor alle nieuwkomers in de F1! En voor Schumacher en Ricciardo, die zullen zich echt moeten terugvechten om á la Hulkenberg weer in een F1 auto terecht te komen. Ook Ocon, Tsunoda en Zhou moeten komend seizoen flink aan de bak om hun stoeltje te behouden
