Steiner: Ferrari’s 2023 krachtbron zal 'de bom' zijn

Haas eindigde het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 met een achtste eindplaats in het constructeursklassement. Het team begon 2022 op sterke wijze, maar viel gedurende het seizoen terug in performance. Diens teambaas Guenther Steiner twijfelt er niet over dat zijn team aankomend seizoen klaar zal staan om een stap voorwaarts te maken; de door het team gebruikte Ferrari-krachtbron van 2023 is naar eigen zeggen 'de bom', hiermee hintend dat Ferrari een sterke stap voorwaarts in performance heeft gemaakt met de ontwikkeling van haar power unit.

Het team van Haas heeft het afgelopen seizoen een stap omhoog gezet. Het Amerikaanse team kende een moeizame twee voorgaande jaren, maar begon 2022 met een ijzersterke prestatie: een vijfde finish voor Formule 1-terugkomer Kevin Magnussen.

Los van de bijzondere pole positie score van eerdergenoemde coureur op Interlagos in Brazilië, viel de performance van het team gedurende het seizoen langzaam maar zeker terug. De auto-upgrades werkten niet naar behoren, terwijl de omliggende concurrenten hier en daar wél een stapje konden zetten. Ook wat betreft de betrouwbaarheid van de motor achterin de VF-22 bolides verliep het seizoen niet perfect. De krachtbron, dat afkomstig is van Ferrari, gaf in 2022 meerdere malen de geest. De Scuderia trachtte om de focus zoveel mogelijk op performance te leggen, waarna de aandacht werd verlegd naar het oplossen van de betrouwbaarheidsproblemen.

Verlatend Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto meent dat het team "grote doelen" heeft gezet voor de ontketening van performance in haar power unit. "In een periode van 25 jaar bij Maranello (Ferrari hoofdkwartier) heb ik nog nooit zoveel potentie in onze ontwikkelingen van de power unit gezien", vertelt Binotto.

Tijdens de Lorenzo Bandini Trophy Awards straalt Steiner vertrouwen uit over de nieuwste variant van de Ferrari krachtbron: "Afgelopen donderdag heb ik met Binotto gepraat en hij vertelde me uit dat de motor van volgend seizoen de bom is. Er is veel support voor Ferrari. En als 'ie (de motor) heel competitief is, dan is dat voor ons ook positief", sluit Steiner af.

Als de PU steeds terug geschroefd moest worden wegens betrouwbaarheidsproblemen en als die nu verholpen zijn, want dat mag, kunnen ze de boel weer open schroeven, dus meer performance vergeleken bij eerst.

    Ik weet niet of een 'bom' nou een echt positieve benaming is voor een PU. Immers, bij het gebruik van een bom is ook veel rookontwikkeling en daar is men bij Ferrari nu juist van verlost ;-)

      Dat klopt, maar je mag nog altijd werken aan de betrouwbaarheid. Aangezien dat tekort schoot moest Ferrari de motor terug schroeven. Vandaar dat er ook veel minder problemen waren in het 2e seizoenshelft voor Ferrari, Haas en Alfa Romeo.

      En de Italiaanse teambaas met het kortgeknipte grijze haar die een norse blik doorgaans afwisselt met een brede grijns van het Amerikaanse team uit Kannapolis kan natuurlijk makkelijker wat meer risico nemen omdat ze bij Haas ook voor een dagsuccesje kunnen gaan...
