Peréz niet geïntimideerd door Red Bull-comeback Ricciardo

Sergio Peréz sluit het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 met een positief gevoel af. De Mexicaan wist dusdanig te presteren dat zijn werkgever Red Bull hem een contractverlenging aanbood dat eind 2024 afloopt. Met de terugkomst van Daniel Ricciardo bij de Red Bull-familie is de mening van velen dat laatstgenoemde zit te azen op zijn stoeltje. Peréz meent zich echter geen zorgen te maken over de potentiële dreiging van Ricciardo’s terugkomst.

Sergio Peréz heeft samen met zijn team van Red Bull een redelijk goed seizoen achter de rug. De Mexicaan kon twee Grand Prix-overwinningen achter zijn naam bijschrijven; tevens eindigde de Red Bull-coureur als derde in het rijdersklassement, vlak achter Ferrari-coureur Charles Leclerc. Voornamelijk in 2021 was Peréz van waarde om teamgenoot Max Verstappen hier en daar een zetje te geven richting de wereldtitel. Zijn prestaties in het afgelopen seizoen daarbij opgeteld was dan ook reden genoeg voor het Formule 1-kamp van de energiedrankjesgigant om de Mexicaan een contract aan te bieden dat aan het einde van 2024 afloopt. Dit betekent dat Peréz waarschijnlijk minder prestatiedruk zal voelen en zich hierdoor volledig kan focussen op een greep naar de rijderstitel.

Op de vraag of de terugkomst van Daniel Ricciardo zorgen creëert bij Peréz, antwoordt hij tegenover Sky: "Ik voel me relaxed. We (F1-coureurs) leven altijd onder druk, deze aankondiging verandert niet zoveel voor mij. Het is een grote prestatie voor Red Bull om een coureur zoals Daniel aan zich te binden. Hij zal veel bijdragen aan het team. Het is een goede kerel en hij is één van de coureurs waar ik het beste mee overweg kan. Van mijn kant verandert er niets", sluit Peréz vertrouwend af.

Ik weet niet of dat vertrouwen van PER helemaal terecht is.
In de RB zat RIC dichter bij VER in de buurt dan PER. Dan moet RIC wel zijn mojo terugvinden natuurlijk. Stiekem hoop ik daar wel een beetje op, omdat ik hem dat wel gun en omdat het een hele mooie strijd kan opleveren voor het tweede RB-zitje.
