Pérez politiek correct: "Geweldig om Ricciardo bij team te hebben"

Daniel Ricciardo is terug van weggeweest. Met een terugkomst bij Red Bull in de rol van reservecoureur, zal de Australiër flink wat bijkomstige taken afwerken. Huidig Red Bull-coureur en tevens teamgenoot van Max Verstappen Sergio Pérez laat weten zeer uit te kijken naar de komst van Ricciardo. Ook meent de man met de bijnaam "Mexicaanse Ministerie van Defensie" dat Ricciardo’s terugkeer geen dreiging voor zijn fulltime stoeltje is.

Daniel Ricciardo heeft het goed wat betreft 2023 goed voor elkaar. De Australiër verloor weliswaar zijn stoeltje bij het Formule 1-team van McLaren, maar vond bij z’n oude vertrouwde Formule 1-familie van Red Bull een thuishaven om naar terug te keren. Met een officiële rol als reservecoureur van Red Bull, krijgt Ricciardo de kans om gedurende 2023 zichzelf weer op te laden voor een potentiële fulltime terugkomst naar de koningsklasse.

Sergio Pérez, fulltime coureur van het team, zegt niet bang en bezorgd te zijn over de komst van de achtvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar. Sterker nog, de Mexicaan laat weten zelfs uit te kijken naar de bakken aan ervaring en kennis die Ricciardo terug naar het team brengt.

"We zijn heel fortuinlijk om Ricciardo bij ons te hebben”, begint Pérez. “Hij weet met zijn bakken aan kennis en ervaring precies waar wij binnen het team over praten. Het is geweldig om een man van zijn kaliber in de buurt te hebben, vooral tijdens de raceweekenden."

Volgens menig toeschouwer zou de beslissing van de Red Bull-top om Ricciardo terug te halen misschien wel een zet kunnen zijn om Pérez het vuur aan zijn schenen te kunnen leggen. De Mexicaan laat echter weten dat hij Ricciardo niet als een dreiging ervaart: "Nee, wanneer je bij een team als Red Bull Racing zit, zul je sowieso op het allerhoogste niveau presteren. Het maakt niet uit of Daniel er wel of niet zou zijn. Red Bull kan zowat elke coureur halen die ze maar willen", vertelt Pérez vertrouwend.
