Horner ziet Grand Prix in New York wel zitten: "Dat zou geweldig zijn"

De Formule 1 is in de afgelopen jaren steeds populairder geworden in de Verenigde Staten. De koningsklasse van de autosport trekt steeds meer fans en er staan volgend jaar drie Grands Prix in de V.S op het programma. Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner ziet een Grand Prix in een andere stad ook wel zitten.

Aankomend seizoen staan er drie opvallende Grands Prix in de Verenigde Staten op het programma. De Amerikaanse Grand Prix wordt nog steeds verreden op het circuit in Austin en sinds vorig jaar staat ook de Grand Prix van Miami op de Formule 1-kalender. Aankomend seizoen wordt ook de Grand Prix van Las Vegas verreden op een stratencircuit dwars door het centrum van de stad.

New York

Red Bull Racing-teambaas Christian Horner ziet ook dat de populariteit van de sport toeneemt in de Verenigde Staten. In gesprek met de Daily Mail wordt hij gevraagd naar een mogelijke Grand Prix in New York: "Dat zou geweldig zijn. Racen in grote Amerikaanse steden is echt enorm gaaf. Een Grand Prix in the Big Apple zou bijvoorbeeld echt een enorm spectaculair event zijn."

Noord-Amerika

Horner weet ook dat de huidige Amerikaanse aandacht voor de Formule 1 zeer belangrijk is. De Britse teambaas is daar dan ook duidelijk over: "Je moet nooit nee zeggen tegen een vierde Amerikaanse Grand Prix. We hebben ook nog een andere race in Noord-Amerika met Montreal, dus waarom niet? Het is fantastisch dat er zoveel interesse is in de V.S. We moeten blij zijn dat we kunnen racen op dit soort plaatsen. Denk aan het circuit in Miami of in Austin. Vegas wordt dit jaar ook waanzinnig."

Racen in New York is alleen gaaf als je het op Manhattan doet. En dat eiland kan je moeilijk een week afsluiten lijkt me. Formule E doet het op een industrieterreintje aan de rand van de stad en dan heeft New York geen enkele meerwaarde.

Vier races in de usa is wel heel erg veel, wat mij betreft. Ik hoop ik dat we Formu(sa)la One kunnen voorkomen.

  New York is prima... als Las Vegas en Miami verdwijnen.
  
  1 land verdient geen 4 GP's in een WK als je het mij vraagt. (Tyla let op wat je zegt... Spanje heeft er ook 4 in Motogp en zijn wel allemaal leuk)
  
  F1 kan beter een poging doen meer wereldwijd te zijn. Een nieuwe poging in India... een land in Afrika en misschien ook wel goed om een tweede race in Oceanië te hebben.

  @Tyla: Eens. Achter de schermen is er natuurlijk een groot (financieel) getouwtrek gaande tussen Uncle Sam en de 'zandbak sjeiks'. Mocht er ooit een compromis gesloten worden tussen die twee grootmachten dan zal er straks een 50/50 verdeling gaan komen qua race locaties, oftewel de helft in de USA en de andere helft in de zandbakken ;-)

  Er is wel een soort inhaalbeweging aan de hand. F1 tracht evenveel GP's per continent te hebben en diegene met het meeste geld en/of het meeste geld opbrengt krijgt de eerste/beste kans.

  Lijkt erop dat RBR opdracht heeft gekregen om de blikjes met gore drank bij de Yankees te gaan promoten, een andere verklaring voor de uitspraken van de 'racer' Horner kan ik niet zien...
