Horner twijfelt of Sargeant’s F1-komst groei in VS zal brengen

De Amerikaanse coureur Logan Sargeant zal dit aankomend seizoen één van drie Formule 1-rookies zijn. De 22-jarige coureur uit de zonnige staat Florida gaat bij het Formule 1-team van Williams naast teamgenoot Alex Albon plaatsnemen. Na jaren afwezigheid, keert de Amerikaanse vlag weer terug op de grid. Zal Sargeant’s komst naar de koningsklasse voor een groei van de sport binnen de Verenigde Staten zorgen? Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner is sceptisch.

Na de lancering van de Netflix-serie Drive to Survive begon de Formule 1 binnen de Verenigde Staten enorm hard te groeien. Het heeft geleid dat het immens grote land dit seizoen maar liefst drie Grands Prix organiseert, namelijk in de zonovergoten staten Texas en Miami en gokhoofdstad Las Vegas.

Met de komst van een nieuwe Amerikaanse coureur naar de Formule 1, zou het aantal Amerikaanse Formule 1-fans zomaar kunnen groeien. Logan Sargeant zal voor het Formule 1-team van Williams gaan debuteren, waar hij naast Alex Albon zal proberen om de Britse renstal terug richting het middenveld te krijgen. Vele stemmen binnen- en buiten de Formule 1-paddock twijfelen echter of Sargeant’s debuut binnen de koningsklasse wel voor een zichtbare stijging vanuit de Amerikaanse hoek zal brengen. Eén van die stemmen is die van Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner:

"Het is geweldig dat we hem hier (binnen de F1) hebben. Hij is een zeer getalenteerde jongen, maar hij zal gelimiteerd zijn in wat hij voor elkaar kan brengen", begint Horner tegenover de New York Post. "Het probleem hiervan, is dat als je op de veertiende of vijftiende plaats rondrijdt, je de mensen niet echt enthousiast zal maken. Als hij daarentegen in de kop van het veld in een sterke auto zou racen, dan zou je soortgelijke reacties kunnen zien als met Fernando (Alonso in Spanje) of Checo (Pérez in Mexico)."

"Stel je voor als er een Amerikaanse Max Verstappen was", droomt Horner. "Wat we (in de F1) nodig hebben, is een jonge, getalenteerde en competitieve Amerikaanse coureur", sluit Horner af.

Ik denk dat Horner gelijk kan hebben.

Afgezien of de jongen "het" heeft, zal het de vraag zijn of Amerikanen hem als boegbeeld gaan zien.
Alexander Rossi was ook een Amerikaan en die had echt wel wat talent, maar Amerika werd niet warm van hem.

Het zal waarschijnlijk wel werken als een "grote naam" de overstap zou maken, en zelfs dan...
De laatste grote naam was Michael Andretti. Echter die kon in zijn korte tijd in F1 geen potten breken,
dus ook hij kon Amerika niet meetrekken meer betrokken te raken bij F1.
En in Indycars rijden er weinig jonge Amerikanen rond die al een naam op hebben gebouwd. Dan heb je eigenlijk alleen Colton Herta. De rest is allemaal al de 30 gepasseerd.

Logan Sargeant heeft daarbij een Williams waar hij mee moet presteren, en ook al houden Amerikanen van een "underdog",... een sporadisch podium zal er waarschijnlijk echt niet in zitten. In de Indycars is dat waarschijnlijker gezien die auto's meer gelijk zijn...

En dan ... moet je nog een "sterren" charisma hebben, dat vinden Amerikanen mooi... geen idee of Sargeant dat heeft ....

  Klopt, maar in de tijd van Rossi was de F1 nog niet zo groot in de VS als nu. Of het verschil gaat maken nu het dat wel is? Dat is vers twee.

In de VS kijken ze wel F1 maar het zal nooit een grote sport daar worden, ze willen het wel, maar het zal het nooit worden.

  Dat is nu nog helemaal niet duidelijk. De VS werden in feite nooit serieus genomen door de F1. Met Netflix, meerdere races en een Amerikaanse eigenaar zit er in ieder geval schot in de zaak. Het zal niet direct populairder zijn dan typisch Amerikaanse sporten, maar daarvan is de populariteit ook tanende sinds wokeness z'n intrede deed. Als F1 dát nou juist achterwege laat, kan het sneller gaan dan verwacht, maar alles heeft tijd nodig.
