Verstappen vol lof over Alonso: "Leeftijd maakt uiteindelijk niets uit"

Na de Grand Prix van Bahrein stonden ze samen op het podium: Max Verstappen en Fernando Alonso zijn het Formule 1-seizoen 2023 op een ijzersterke manier begonnen. Dat Verstappen, die als regerend tweevoudig wereldkampioen op de toppen van zijn kunnen presteert, de race won, daarvan keek niemand op. Dat zijn zestien jaar oudere collega naast hem op het ereschavot plaatsnam deed echter meer stof opwaaien.

Verstappen onderkent dat Alonso een bijzondere coureur is. De Nederlander stak bij het Britse Daily Mail de loftrompet over zijn Spaanse conculega. “Fernando heeft zelfs nog tegen mijn vader geracet!”, lacht de leider van het Formule 1-wereldkampioenschap, die zich herinnert dat zijn vader Jos Verstappen in zowel het seizoen 2001 als de jaargang van 2003 het circuit deelde met Alonso.

“Hij is 41 jaar oud en maakt deel uit van een compleet andere generatie. We zijn een aantal keren samen naar een Grand Prix gevlogen en ik ken hem inmiddels iets beter. Wat ik ongelooflijk fascinerend vind, naast het ongekende talent van hem dat hij gedurende al zijn jaren in de autosport heeft getoond, is zijn passie om te presteren op het hoogste niveau – zelfs nu nog. Daarnaast heeft hij een ongebreidelde liefde voor alles wat racet, zo helpt hij bijvoorbeeld jonge coureurs en onderhoudt hij een go-kart team.”

“Zijn passie om te racen en te presteren, zelfs als het niet de Formule 1 betreft maar ook evenementen als de Indianapolis 500 en de Dakar-rally is ontzettend mooi om te zien. Hij is een heer richting de jonge coureurs en we kunnen ontzettend goed met elkaar opschieten, ondanks het leeftijdsverschil. Daaruit blijkt andermaal dat leeftijd eigenlijk helemaal niets uitmaakt.”

Alonso reed in Bahrein naar de negenennegentigste Formule 1-podiumplaats van zijn fabelachtige autosportloopbaan. De teller van Verstappen staat inmiddels op 78 podiumplekken. De Nederlander heeft al wel meer overwinningen dan zijn Spaanse tegenstander: het staat 36 om 32.

Ik vind het mooi hoe Max en Nando met elkaar omgaan. Het wederzijds respect is groot tussen deze twee. Soms heb ik ook het vermoeden dat Alonso dingen van zichzelf in Max herkent

  Dat heb ik dus ook.
  Fernando heeft natuurlijk een gigantische reputatie in de F1 in de jaren opgebouwd en ziet nu dat Max dat ook aan het doen is.
  Fernando ziet in Max zijn jongere ik.
  De gedrevenheid en de wil om te winnen (wat natuurlijk iedere F1 coureur wil).
  Max heeft enorm veel respect voor Alonso en vice versa zal het niet anders zijn.
  Mooi om te zien dat ze op het podium stonden en hopelijk in Jeddah weer.
  De volgorde maakt mij niet uit.:)
