De Vries sprak met Verstappen over Jeddah: "Had contact over dat kwalificatierondje"

Nyck de Vries rijdt dit weekend voor het eerst in zijn loopbaan op het Jeddah Corniche Circuit. De Nederlandse AlphaTauri-coureur heeft zich zo goed mogelijk voorbereid op de race en hij heeft alle sessie al teruggekeken. De Vries sprak er zelfs over met zijn landgenoot en Red Bull Racing-coureur Max Verstappen.

De Vries heeft in de Formule E wel in Saoedi-Arabië gereden, maar op het pijlsnelle circuit in Jeddah heeft de AlphaTauri-coureur nog geen meter gereden. Vandaag zal hij in de vrije trainingen zijn eerste meters op het circuit gaan draaien en zal hij dit weekend op jacht gaan naar zijn eerste punten van het seizoen.

Voorbereiding

De Vries heeft de afgelopen anderhalve week gebruikt om zoveel mogelijk informatie te verzamelen over het circuit in Jeddah. Tijdens de mediadag op donderdag sprak hij zich uit bij Motorsport.com: "Ik heb alle kwalificaties en de races helemaal bekeken. Ik had vanochtend nog appcontact met Max over zijn kwalificatierondje in 2021. Ik keek die ronde terug en ik vond het enorm indrukwekkend. Daar hebben we het nog wel eventjes over gehad!"

Laatste bocht

Verstappen leek die dag op weg te zijn naar de pole position, tot dat hij in de allerlaatste bocht de vangrail raakte en zijn rondje niet kon afmaken. De Vries sprak ook daarover met zijn landgenoot Verstappen: "Max grapte dat zelf ook al! Ik was echter meer onder de indruk van de aanpak zelf. Je kon vanuit buitenaf goed zien hoe agressief en hoe aanvallend dat rondje van Max toen was."

De AlphaTauri-coureur heeft naar eigen zeggen geen contact met Verstappen gehad over diens buikgriep, al vermoedt hij na het onderlinge contact dat de wereldkampioen wel in orde is voor het daadwerkelijke raceweekend. Verstappen is momenteel [gisteren, 14:55uur] overigens onderweg naar Jeddah.

Crashes extra kostbaar door budgetplafond
De genoemde crash onderstreept ook meteen dat de marge voor fouten miniem is op de snelle omloop.
Het vermijden van crashes is tegenwoordig extra belangrijk, omdat een klap gevolgen kan hebben voor de doorontwikkeling van de auto. Schade valt immers ook onder het budgetplafond en kan dus ten koste gaan van upgrades.
De Vries weet dat, maar stelt dat coureurs er tijdens het rijden niet al te veel aan moeten denken.
"Je weet het in je achterhoofd wel, maar je moet er eigenlijk niet mee bezig zijn. Als coureur moet je nou eenmaal de limiet opzoeken, al probeer je dat natuurlijk wel zo verstandig mogelijk te doen.

De laatste keer in de Formule E raakte ik de muur tijdens mijn eerste snelle ronde en miste ik daardoor alle trainingstijd. Dat is zeker in de Formule E een behoorlijke handicap, al werd het alsnog wel een goed weekend.
Je weet dat rijtijd op een stratencircuit cruciaal is en dat de baan vanzelf naar je toe komt, maar goed, uiteindelijk zijn we ook allemaal mensen..."

  Hij miste toen de apex door een stevige rugwind, te weinig downforce en boink dus. De race daarna was wel interessant overigens, weet niet meer precies hoe en wat, maar er is nog veel over geschreven... ;-)
