McLaren-coureurs Norris en Piastri keuren nieuw sprintconcept goed

Formule 1-rookie Oscar Piastri meent met spanning naar zijn eerste Formule 1-sprintrace te kijken. Volgens de Australische jongeling kan er echter wel het een en ander aan het sprintraceweekend verbeterd worden, waarbij ook teamgenoot Lando Norris mee instemt.

Lando Norris en Oscar Piastri staan achter het idee om het huidige sprintraceweekend op de schop te gooien. Volgens beide coureurs is het huidige sprintweekend te risicovol, omdat op dit moment de uitslag van de sprintrace de startgrid van de hoofdrace bepaalt. Vandaag (dinsdag) gaat de Formule 1 commissie echter vergaderen om het huidige idee te veranderen, zodat zowel de fans als de teams en coureurs er meer voordeel uit kunnen halen. Mocht het nieuwe concept het groenlichtsignaal gaan krijgen, dan zal de uitslag van de sprintrace niet meer de startvolgorde van de hoofdrace bepalen.

"Het zal mijn leven er zeker niet makkelijker op maken", begint Piastri, doelend op het feit dat het aankomende sprintraceweekend minder vrije trainingen dan normaal op de planning heeft staan. "Maar uiteindelijk heeft iedereen dat probleem, dus maak ik mij daar niet zoveel zorgen over. Als ze (de Formule 1) met het nieuwe plan doorgaan, dan zal dat een verbetering zijn."

"Momenteel is het meer alsof er twee races zijn die ongeveer op elkaar lijken. Niemand wil te veel risico's in de sprintrace nemen. Het zou mooi zijn dat wat er ook tijdens de sprintrace gebeurt, geen invloed op de hoofdrace heeft. Dat is beter voor iedereen. Baku heeft sowieso altijd kans om chaos te creëren, maar als we met het nieuwe plan doorgaan, dan zou ik daar tevreden mee zijn", aldus Piastri.

Teamgenoot Norris beaamt de conclusie van Piastri: "Ik wil niet dat iets de hoofdrace, het hoofdspektakel van de Formule 1, door iets beïnvloed kan worden. Daar zijn in de voorgaande jaren wel eens voorbeelden van geweest. Iedereen is toch wel een beetje bang om tijdens de sprintrace iets op te lopen dat je zondag verpest. Het (nieuwe plan) zal meer entertainment voor de kijkers en de fans genereren, terwijl wij een extra race hebben, dus ik kijk er naar uit", concludeert Norris.

Vraag het me af. De coureurs die buiten de punten rijden in de sprint race hebben geen enkele motivatie om een andere coureur in te halen als er niets op het spel staat. Zal dus snel saai worden voor deel dat buiten de punten rijd, zie ze zelfs stoppen om risico en slijtage te vermijden.

Eens kijken of ze nog net zo enthousiast zijn als ze tijdens zo'n
niets voorstellende sprintrace, die werkelijk NIETS met een GP weekend te maken
heeft, hun wagen aan puin rijden en zondags vanuit de pitlane moeten starten.

Kijk al uit naar de sprintrace!
Vind de veranderingen die ze aangebracht hebben aan dit format zeker een verbetering, blijf wel vinden dat 6 a 8 sprintraces per seizoen de max is.
