Jos Verstappen wint eerste rally: "Doet mij enorm goed"

Terwijl zijn zoon Max op jacht ging naar de zege in de Grand Prix van Miami, kwam Jos Verstappen goed voor de dag in de Monteberg Rally in België. Verstappen senior kroop weer achter het stuur van zijn Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 en hij wist zijn eerste rally te winnen. Hij schreef namelijk de Monteberg Rally op zijn naam.

Verstappen senior reed zijn eerste rally van het jaar en hij was dus direct succesvol. Samen met zijn navigator Renaud Jamoul ging het steeds beter met Verstappen en hij schreef de laatste drie stages op zijn naam. Hij kwam hierdoor uit op precies dezelfde tijd als Davy Vanneste. Volgens de regels is in zo'n situatie de uitslag van de eerst stint doorslaggevend en daar was Verstappen de snelste.

Moeilijke periode

De rallyzege zorgde voor veel vreugde bij Verstappen. De voormalig Formule 1-coureur was trots op zichzelf en dat sprak hij na afloop dan ook uit. Bij Verstappen.com was hij duidelijk: "Dit doet mij enorm goed. Het was een moeilijke periode voor mij omdat ik een paar maanden niet kon rijden. Dat ik op deze manier terugkeer, daar ben ik enorm tevreden mee. Toen het gedurende de dag begon te regenen, was het echt verraderlijk glad. Toen kon ik echter tijd terugpakken. Ik ben heel erg blij met mijn eerste rallyzege."

Zoon Max volgde vanuit Miami de verrichtingen van zijn vader in de Monteberg Rally. De Red Bull Racing-coureur was enorm trots op de prestaties van zijn vader. Max Verstappen wordt geciteerd door Verstappen.com: "Het is heel erg mooi voor hem. We hadden elkaar al gebeld en het is natuurlijk super om te zien. Hij steekt er veel moeite in en het is een totaal andere discipline dan wij als familie gewend zijn. Het is echt super leuk voor hem."
