Horner omschrijft zijn leiderschap: "Ik heb nog nooit een managementcursus gevolgd"

Red Bull Racing jaagt momenteel op de tweede constructeurstitel op rij. De Oostenrijkse renstal presteert ijzersterk in de Formule 1 en dat doet men onder leiding van Christian Horner. De Britse teambaas is het gezicht van het team en zit al sinds jaar en dag achter de knoppen. Hij weet zelf niet hoe hij zijn leiderschap kan omschrijven.

Horner is al sinds de komst van Red Bull naar de Formule 1 in 2005 betrokken bij het team. De Brit is dan ook één van de langstzittende teambazen van de koningsklasse van de autosport. Onder zijn leiderschap werden er vier wereldtitels gepakt met Sebastian Vettel en is Max Verstappen tegenwoordig de grote man in de Formule 1. Verstappen kan dit jaar voor het derde seizoen op rij wereldkampioen worden.

Horner zelf geniet van de successen van zijn team. De Brit is een voormalig coureur en heeft dan ook nooit op andere vlakken als leider gewerkt. In gesprek met The Financial Times probeert Horner te achterhalen waarom hij zo succesvol is: "Ik geniet van werken met mensen. Ik probeer het beste uit hun te halen en we werken als één collectief. We hebben duidelijke doelen. Ik probeer te luisteren en hen daarna te helpen. Ik ben geen gediplomeerd engineer, ik ben een oud-coureur. Ik heb nog nooit een managementcursus gevolgd en het draait er volgens mij om hoe je mensen vertrouwen kan geven en hoe je ze duidelijk kan maken wat nodig is om te werken als een groep."

Management is mensenwerk. Dat kun je of kun je niet. Veel lui met opleiding kunnen het in ieder geval niet.

  Niet helemaal met eens. Je kan veel dingen leren. Sommige kunnen dit van nature en sommige mensen hebben er wat training in nodig. Maar met de juiste begeleiding kan iedereen leren leiden.

  Bij elke organisatie waar ik ooit voor werkte, en dat zijn grote spelers, waren het de managers die de boel verklooiden. Keer op keer. Ik heb er ook toevallig ook ooit voor geleerd (uiteindelijk ander pad gekozen) en les één zal ik nooit vergeten: management is mensenwerk. Daarmee was eigenlijk alles gezegd. De rest kun je leren, maar als je een eikel bent kun je geen goede manager zijn.

Eerlijk is eerlijk hij doet het erg goed, althans voor zover ik kan beoordelen.
Echter hij doet het niet alleen want Marko is echt niet alleen adviseur, daar kan Horner met heel veel dingen terecht.

Als je hem hoor praten merk je al dat hij een erg slimme en goede people manager is. Woorden als fantastic en phenomenal hoor je hem dan ook vaak zeggen. En behalve dat is hij enorm beschermend en hard naar de mensen die zijn team concurreren. Beste teambaas van de f1.
