Horner had direct vertrouwen in Ford-deal: "Hij arriveerde met een Perez-pet"

Red Bull Racing gaat vanaf 2026 samenwerken met Ford. Dit nieuws werd begin dit jaar bekend gemaakt tijdens de launch van het team in New York en sindsdien zijn de voorbereidingen voor het motorproject in volle gang. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner had al bij de eerste gesprekken een goed gevoel over de samenwerking.

In 2026 gaan er nieuwe motorreglementen gelden in de Formule 1. Red Bull ontwikkelt momenteel zelf krachtbronnen volgens die regels en Ford zal ze daarbij gaan helpen. Red Bull Powertrains en Ford bundelen de krachten bij de ontwikkeling van deze motoren. Red Bull was al geruime tijd opzoek naar een partner nadat eerder de gesprekken met Porsche vastliepen.

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner is blij met de deal met Ford. De Brit had er al snel een goed gevoel over en legde in gesprek met de Financial Times uit hoe de onderhandelingen verliepen: "Het begon allemaal echt vorig jaar in de herfst. Het ging allemaal best snel omdat ik hoorde dat Ford een comeback overwoog en wij een partner voor het motorenproject zochten. Dus toen we onderweg waren naar Brazilië maakte ik een tussenstop in Detroit. Daar sprak ik met Bill Ford en Jim Farley."

Perez-pet

Horner had direct een goed gevoel over een mogelijke samenwerking met Ford. Al in een vroege fase van de onderhandelingen wist de Brit dat het goed zat: "Toen Jim bij de eerste meeting arriveerde met een Sergio Perez-pet, had ik het gevoel dat het goed begon. We hadden een geweldige meeting. Soms weet je direct bij het begin al dat alles klopt. Ford stond open voor een comeback en ze waren onder de indruk van wat we aan het doen waren."

Ja, een Perez-pet zegt zoveel... Het zijn gewoon de gebruikelijke PR-praatjes. Ford komt niet terug, dat is PR-praat. Ze zijn terug zoals Aston Martin (sinds de deal met Red Bull zelfs al) en Alfa Romeo al terug zijn en Lotus sinds 2015 weg zijn. Het zijn sponsordeals. Technisch is er nul meerwaarde. Dat geldt dus ook voor die prietpraat dat Ford het elektrische deel voor hun rekening zou nemen.

En dat is weer een teken dat PER gewoon commercieel gezien veel meer van waarde is dan let say Max.
Dat en Checco heeft gewoon de gun factor bij de internationale fans.

  In Amerika blijft Verstappen populairder. Nieuwe fans hellen toe hoe dan ook naar de kampioen. Verstappen won de laatste 4 races in de vs en werd zelfs ooit een podium onthouden in de VS.
  Perez is vooral populair in een bepaalde bevolkingsgroep. Dat er 5 Perez fans boe roepen en 500 Leclerc fans in Italie zegt niet al te veel.

Ik hoop het voor RBR en Verstappen dat men de juiste keuze heeft gemaakt. Ik had liever gezien dat men met Honda was verder gegaan. Mijn gevoel over de samenwerking met Ford zit vol vraagtekens en heb met Honda een beter gevoel.

  Er is geen samenwerking met Ford op technisch vlak. RBR wil het zelf doen en heeft daar de nodige mensen voor aangetrokken. Afwachten hoe dit zal gaan. Honda was nu eenmaal geen optie meer.
