Sterke Ocon haalt opgelucht adem: "Ik raakte de muur"

De verschillen in de kwalificatie in Monaco waren zeer klein. In het laatste gedeelte van de kwalificatie maakten veel coureurs kans op de pole position. Max Verstappen was uiteindelijk de snelste, maar Esteban Ocon was ook heel dichtbij. De Fransman kwam uiteindelijk maar 0,188 seconden tekort. Hij was zeer tevreden met zijn resultaat.

Ocon verraste iedereen toen hij in de slotfase van het derde kwalificatiegedeelte ineens paarse sectortijden noteerde. Hij had kortstondig de snelste tijd in handen, maar sloot de sessie uiteindelijk af met de vierde tijd. Door de gridstraf van Charles Leclerc schuift hij op naar de derde startplek. Dat betekent dus dat hij de race morgen vanaf de tweede startrij mag starten en dat is een goed uitgangspunt op het bijzondere circuit van Monaco.

Na afloop van de kwalificatie was de blijdschap bij Ocon en zijn team Alpine zeer groot. Achter de schermen rommelde het flink bij het team en dit resultaat was dus een flinke opsteker. Bij Sky Sports sprak hij zich uit: "Ik heb hier enorm van genoten! Wat een dag! Als je ons voorafgaand het weekend had gezegd dat we ons in de top vijf zouden kwalificeren, dan zouden we ervoor tekenen. Het was een bijzonder rondje. Ik raakte de muur, het was geen aai ofzo, het was een enorme klap. De auto bleef echter heel en ik kon het rondje afmaken."
