Ben Sulayem onder de indruk: "Stel je voor dat ik General Motors afwijs"

Begin dit jaar opende autosportfederatie FIA een zogenaamde expression of interest. Geïnteresseerde partijen konden zich melden bij de FIA en inmiddels zijn de inschrijvingen gesloten. Meerdere mogelijke teams hebben zich aangemeld waaronder de samenwerking tussen Andretti en Cadillac. FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem vraagt zich af hoe hij nee kan zeggen tegen dit plan.

De Amerikaanse racefamilie Andretti toonde al geruime tijd interesse in deelname aan de Formule 1. Nadat een eerdere overname van het team van Sauber mislukte, gaf Andretti aan dat ze zelf een team willen beginnen. Samen met General Motors-merk Cadillac hebben ze zich aangemeld bij de FIA en deelden ze hun vergevorderde plannen.

FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is onder de indruk van de plannen van Andretti Cadillac. Ben Sulayem is opvallend open in gesprek met AP: "Mensen moeten begrijpen dat wij hier zijn om de sport te promoten en dat we dat op een eerlijke manier doen. Het Expression of Interest-proces is heel duidelijk en er zijn geen omstandigheden waarbij we een team kunnen afwijzen als ze aan de criteria voldoen. Dus stel je voor dat ik nee zeg tegen General Motors. Ik ga geen regels breken. Laten we iedereen toe? Nee. Maar hoe gaan we General Motors ooit afwijzen?"

Ja dat wordt een probleem Andreti heeft heel slim GM er bij gehaald en zeker nu Ford uitgebreid met RB gaat samenwerken breekt er oorlog uit aan het FIA front als deze groep niet deel mag nemen, overigens denk ik dat een team als AT en bvb Williams beter overgenomen kunnen worden door krachtige financiële partijen waardoor er meer en beter ontwikkeld kan worden. het lijk er nu vaak op dat er een groep semiprofessionals mee doet met een groep professionals. Meer teams op de grit betekend minder inkomsten voor de andere teams wat zeker voor de kleinere teams een groot probleem kan worden. Vroeger moesten de teams zich nog plaatsen voor de startgrit en vielen er soms wel 4 auto's buiten de boot dat waren nog een tijden.
