Colombia was dichtbij plekje op Formule 1-kalender

De populariteit van de Formule 1 is in de afgelopen jaren flink toegenomen. Niet alleen de fans tonen interesse in de sport, ook landen, steden en circuits willen meeliften op het succes. Vorig jaar werd duidelijk dat Colombia een Grand Prix wilde organiseren. Volgens Juan Pablo Montoya was een Grand Prix in zijn thuisland zeer dichtbij een plekje op de kalender.

Vorig jaar gingen er veel geruchten rond over een mogelijke Grand Prix in de Colombiaanse stad Barranquilla. Vanuit het stadsbestuur klonken veel positieve geluiden, maar inmiddels is het alweer geruime tijd stil rondom het project. Het lijkt er dan ook op dat de plannen een stille dood zijn gestorven en dat het een luchtkasteel was. Nu blijkt echter dat de plannen veel serieuzer waren dan gedacht.

Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Juan Pablo Montoya geeft in gesprek met zijn landgenoten van Semana aan dat er alleen nog maar een handtekening moest worden gezet. Montoya meldt dat hij betrokken was bij het project en dat het contract zelfs al klaar lag. Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali zou Barranquilla zelfs al hebben bezocht. Volgens Montoya zou de race luisteren naar de naam 'Grand Prix van de Caraïben'.

Volgens de Colombiaanse oud-coureur zou Madrid de vervanger worden van de race en hij zegt dat er al in 2025 in de Spaanse hoofdstad wordt geracet.

Had mooi geweest, een extra GP in Zuid-Amerika. Of Colombia daarvoor de beste locatie was weet ik zo net nog niet. Ik zie het in ieder geval meer zitten dan weer een stratencircuit erbij, in dit geval in Madrid.
