Häkkinen tipt Ferrari: "McLaren is het voorbeeld"

Het team van Ferrari heeft een teleurstellende eerste seizoenshelft achter de rug. De Italiaanse renstal kan Red Bull Racing niet bijhouden en moet vechten om de resterende podiumplaatsen. Mika Häkkinen zag deze problemen al aankomen en stelt dat Ferrari een voorbeeld moet nemen aan McLaren.

Ferrari begon het seizoen vol goede moed, maar men kwam als snel van een koude kermis thuis. Het snelheidsverschil met Red Bull Racing is veel te groot en ook de teams van Mercedes en Aston Martin bleken een stapje sneller te zijn. In de laatste races voor de zomerstop bleek dat ook het team van McLaren een uitdager is. De Britse renstal heeft een aantal grote updates doorgevoerd en streed in Silverstone en Hongarije mee om de podiumplekken.

McLaren

Tweevoudig wereldkampioen Mika Häkkinen geeft aan dat hij de problemen van Ferrari al zag aankomen tijdens de wintertest in Bahrein. In gesprek met La Gazzetta dello Sport legt hij uit hoe Ferrari zich kan verbeteren: "Je hebt mensen nodig die alles op technisch niveau beter begrijpen. Dat is nu lastiger, vroeger mochten we onbeperkt testen. Het is wel mogelijk om terug te slaan, dat liet McLaren in de laatste races zien. Zij zijn het voorbeeld. In Woking wees niemand naar elkaar en ze hebben hard gewerkt om oplossingen te vinden."

2024

Häkkinen wijst vooral naar de positieve energie bij het team van McLaren. Hij is dan ook van mening dat Ferrari voor diezelfde aanpak moet kiezen. De Fin stelt dat McLaren voorlopig geldt als de uitdager voor 2024: "Het is nog lastig te zeggen, maar ik denk wel dat McLaren heel erg sterk zal zijn. Ik weet hoe ze weken in Woking en gezien de stappen die ze maakten in de laatste twee maanden, heb ik het gevoel dat ze verder gaan groeien."
